Jaguars signing Tanner Muse could be huge in light of the Andrew Wingard injury

• Tanner Muse just signed with the Jaguars. He could end up stealing a roster spot on their initial 53-man roster.

Teams shuffle their rosters throughout training camp. They move on from players who haven't stood out and bring others who may be able to contribute. Some of the additions turn out to be much but there's one the Jacksonville Jaguars made that could end up being meaningful.

The Jags announced they signed safety Tanner Muse, along with defensive end Rasheem Green, and defensive end Raymond Johnson. In a corresponding move, they also waived defensive end Andre Carter and linebacker Trey Kiser. The team also moved on from kicker Riley Patterson the day prior.

All three signings are of the depth variety but Muse could end up making the 53-man roster. The same day the team's brass signed him, safety Andrew Wingard left Day 6 of training camp with a knee injury and was one of a handful of players who sat out the following practice.

Jacksonville hasn't made any announcement regarding Dewey, so it could be just the usual bumps and bruises that come with training camp but if he has to miss time, Muse could potentially step in his place. A third-round pick by the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2020 draft, the former Clemson Tiger missed his rookie campaign with a toe injury and was released the next offseason.

Muse was then picked up by the Seattle Seahawks before the start of the 2021 season and spent two years with them, appearing in 23 games with one start and registering 20 total tackles, along with one pass defensed. The Belmont, North Carolina native was waived in 2023 and promptly signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers but his tenure with them only lasted a few months.

Just before the start of the 2023 regular season, the Los Angeles Chargers signed Muse and went on to play 10 games for them.

Muse was part of the Raiders' infamous 2020 draft class overseen by draft analyst-turned-general manager Mike Mayock. That year, they had three third-round picks, and two of them — one being the safety — never played a snap for them. Heck, Lynn Bowden Jr. was traded just a few months later after being selected.

How Tanner Muse could make the Jaguars 53-man roster in 2024

Las Vegas raised eyebrows when they drafted Tanner Muse, as he was seen as a late-round selection. The fact that they moved on from him just one year later kind of helped validate the belief that he was picked too early. That said, the Seattle Seahawks saw what he could bring to the table and took a chance on him, proving that players can flourish under the right system and with a bit of patience.

This begs the question, how does Muse fit the Jacksonville Jaguars? He's mostly played special teams throughout his career, so that's where he could contribute. On the other hand, he could add depth to safety in case Andrew Wingard's turned out to be serious. Then again, the team has several in-house options they could consider to replace the former Wyoming Cowboy in case he misses time.

Daniel Thomas would be the first in line to become the top reserve at safety. The Jags could also turn to Darnell Savage, who'll tentatively play nickel. Sophomore Erick Hallet II would be another option. The same is true for undrafted rookie Josh Proctor. Muse would need to show he's a better alternative and his experience could give him an edge.

Ultimately, bringing in Tanner Muse is a low-risk move that could come in handy. But if it doesn't pan out, the Jaguars can move on without risk.
