Jaguars fans should be hyped up about this bold prediction for 2024 NFL season
The Jacksonville Jaguars are coming off back-to-back winning seasons. However, they haven't been able to reach the 10-win mark since 2017. NFL Spin Zone believes they'll pull off this evasive feat in 2024.
Lou Scataglia of NFL Spin Zone drew up a list of bold predictions for each NFL team. He believes that the Jaguars will get double-digit wins in 2024, arguing that Trevor Lawrence will have a better arsenal of weapons at his disposal.
"The Jacksonville Jaguars could be a dangerous team in 2024. They were almost that way in 2023, but injuries and inconsistent play at WR spelled the end of their season. It marked the second year in a row that they went 9-8.
Trevor Lawrence did not play well statistically, but much of his production, or lack thereof, was due to his sub-par pass-catchers, really outside of Evan Engram. Well, GM Trent Baalke added Gabe Davis in free agency and Brian Thomas Jr in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Christian Kirk is also very good, so maybe this new corps of WRs could be what pushes the Jags to the next tier."
On the other hand, Jaguars fans may not be thrilled that Scataglia projects the Houston Texans will win Super Bowl 59. Then again, it could be worse. He could've predicted Jacksonville having a losing season or Trevor Lawrence dealing with injuries once again, so it's good to see the Jaguars getting a bit of love heading into 2024.
As noted before, the Jags last won 10 games in 2017. That year, they reached the AFC Championship. In total, they've racked up 10 victories or more three times the past 20 years. They went 12-4 in 2004 and 11-5 two years later. For comparison, they failed to win six games or more 11 times in the same span.
It's worth noting that most of Jacksonville's losing seasons came during the Gene Smith and David Caldwell eras. They held general manager duties for most of the 2010s and both of them struggled to replenish the roster on a consistent basis.
Under Caldwell, the Jags made the playoffs in 2017 but that was an outlier rather than a sign of things to come. The next three seasons, they won a combined 12 games, and he was given the boot near the end of 2020.
One big reason for Caldwell's dismissal was his refusal to reward the team's best players and trade them to acquire future assets. Yannick Ngakoue, Jalen Ramsey, Calais Campbell, and Leonard Fournette were integral to the Jags' success in the late 2010s and they were either shipped out of town or released.
To replace Caldwell, the Jaguars promoted Trent Baalke, who had joined the team as the vice president of player personnel in 2020, to general manager full-time. While Baalke's tenure hasn't been perfect, he's done a full 180 when it comes to paying homegrown talent. This offseason, he's given top-market contracts to Trevor Lawrence, Josh Hines-Allen, and cornerback Tyson Campbell.
On top of that, Baalke gave linebacker Foyesade Oluokun an extension after signing him in free agency in 2022. Last year, he also gave tight end Evan Engram a new deal. By locking up cornerstone players, the Jaguars expect to become contenders for the foreseeable future.
The Jaguars have a favorable chance of finishing 10-7 or better in 2024
The Jaguars' 2024 schedule won't be a walk in the park. They'll get a slater of playoff teams to start the season. They'll face the Miami Dolphins in the opener. Then, the Cleveland Browns, and the Buffalo Bills. They'll also slated to face the Philadelphia Eagles later in the year. On top of that, the AFC South has gotten significantly better. That said, winning 10 games is doable.
The Jaguars made upgrades to both sides of the ball. They took care of most of their needs in the offseason and seemingly don't have a glaring weakness ahead of the regular season. Trevor Lawrence is healthy after dealing with a myriad of ailments last year and has a much better supporting cast in 2024. Moreover, the defense should experience meaningful improvement with Ryan Nielsen calling the shots.
The bottom line is that the Jacksonville Jaguars are flying under the radar but have enough talent to make noise and win more than 10 games in 2024.
