Do you remember how much hype there was around the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2018? I do. The squad was coming off the monumental arrival of the Sacksonville defense, and everyone just knew that the Jags wouldn't let another opportunity slip away if they made it back to the AFC Championship Game.
While Liam Coen's version of the Jaguars didn't make it quite as far last postseason, the buildup leading into the 2026 campaign feels just as electric. If anything, the optimistic chatter from figures familiar with the franchise is almost an identical rerun of the last time Jacksonville felt ready to take its place among the NFL's elite.
One big reason for the optimism is Parker Washington, one valuable veteran who's helped the Jags get to this point with his contributions over the years. During a recent interview with Action News Jax, Washington discussed his exchange with Liam Coen, adding key context to the conversation.
"[Ready] to do it again, and [ready] to take the next step and be the partner. I don't want to say there's a ceiling," Washington said. "I just want to just keep going and keep [being] the best me and put my best foot forward, and [see] what [he and the Jaguars] can do."
The Penn State alum's remarks are one of the best signs that the 2026 Jags are coming to play, and the rest of the NFL might not be ready for an era where Jacksonville's consistently on top of the divisional and conference standings.
Leaders like Parker Washington could be the deciding factor in the Liam Coen Era
I won't take up all of your time going through the 2018 Jaguars' entire history, but let's just say all the attention from the national media got into a few of the leaders' heads. Doug Marrone was obviously a good enough coach to get the Jags to the doorstep, but the hard-nosed New Yorker couldn't connect with the rambunctious and rebellious personalities that ended up becoming the most dominant voices in his locker room.
In this era of Jaguars football, leaders like Parker Washington and Josh Hines-Allen have been laser-focused on taking their own performances to the next level while also mentoring the young bucks who are maturing under them.
Even struggling players like Brian Thomas Jr. have taken accountability for their slipups and pledged to become the best man in teal they can be as they bounce back however they can. In Washington's case, being the best Jag on the planet could include doubling as one of the league's more dangerous punt returners on the field.
In theory, BTJ, Jakobi Meyers, and Brenton Strange could be the top three pass catchers on the depth chart in most of Liam Coen's formations. James Gladstone's decision to draft Nate Boerkircher in the second round is a sign that the offense will be working out of multi-TE looks more often as well. In those cases, Washington wouldn't be on the field unless he was giving Meyers and Thomas a breather.
I say all that to say that there's no reason to think that Washington will be pulled off returning duties just yet. If my shot in the dark turns out to be true, Jacksonville's elite run defense could force opposing offenses to punt the ball to No. 11 and give him a chance to flip the field single-handedly. That'd give Coen's retooled run game an opening to chew some clock and suffocate the enemy's defenses.
Once again, Washington's commitment to putting his best foot forward can only spell good news for those waiting for the franchise to show some consistency. Last season, he flashed signs of developing into one of the squad's best wide receivers if given the nod, and he'll get more than a few chances to build upon the foundation he laid once the regular season kicks off.
If the Nittany Lion can end up improving his rapport with Trevor Lawrence even more during training camp, he would officially become yet another weapon that the rest of the NFL has to deal with come September. Something tells me that this is the exact outcome his head coach is hoping for this summer.
