One of the biggest storylines with training camp underway is whether the Jacksonville Jaguars will reach a long-term extension with wide receiver Parker Washington before the start of the regular season.
Washington is coming off a banner season and is entering a contract year. Already, Jacksonville has locked up several key contributors in the past few months, so it's fair to ask why they haven't struck a deal with Washington. Based on what head coach Liam Coen had to say, it doesn't look like it's an issue.
Liam Coen says Parker Washington will be ready for the Jaguars
Liam Coen made an appearance on the 1010 XL and said that Parker Washington assured him that he'll be ready to go.
"I texted Parker last week. You know, just a little,' Here we go, man. Let's get ready to go.' And he's like, 'I'm ready to kill, I'm ready to go.' And that's all I need to hear from him," Coen said when asked about Washington's contract negotiations (1:28:36 mark). "I mean, that is. I mean, that stuff really does truly work itself out."
Coen continued, "I've always been super impressed with Parker. Take his preparation. He's usually the first guy in the building, him and Trevor really have continued to build chemistry and a connection. That's something that we all appreciate and respect a ton. And so, whether he's signed pre-training camp, during training camp, or not, I have a lot of confidence that we're going to get the best version of Parker Washington."
This isn't the first time Coen has heaped praise on Watson in recent weeks. During a different exchange, he talked about just how much the fourth-year receiver has improved since 2025.
A sixth-round pick in 2023, Washington didn't get much playing time early in his stint with the Jaguars because he was stuck behind Christian Kirk. But Jacksonville cut ties with Kirk last year to pave the way for him, and the former Penn State Nittany Lion made the most of it, registering 58 receptions for 807 yards with five touchdowns.
It's hard to tell just what kind of contract demands Washington has, but he could be asking for more than $18 million and even $20 million per year after fellow receivers Jayden Reed and Christian Watson got new deals in the offseason.
Parker Washington is poised to have a banner season with or without a new deal
Regardless of when the Jaguars strike a deal with Parker Washington, or even if they don't, it doesn't look like it will be an issue. For the time being, the Sugar Land, Texas native is focused on his preparation for the regular season, so he'll surely be ready to go even if he doesn't get an extension.
Heck, it's possible that Washington won't mind entering the season without a contract because he could raise his value even more. Liam Coen wants him to run more vertical routes, and he could still serve as a returner, an area where he excels.
Negotiations with the Jaguars could always reach a stalemate, but it's good to hear that Parker Washington will be ready no matter what.
