To say this week has been one of the most memorable in Jacksonville Jaguars history would be an understatement.
The entire situation which brought the Jaguars Liam Coen as their new head coach was wild, to say the least. Not everybody is thrilled with how it went down, obviously, especially over in Tampa Bay. But, this is now reality. The Jaguars were able to land one of their top two coaching candidates, despite Coen reportedly agreeing to stay in Tampa Bay a couple of days ago.
With Coen in the fold, things are going to change for Trevor Lawrence and the offense. As the team's new head coach, Coen might opt to try and bring some familiar faces to Jacksonville via free agency.
One of the Jagaurs' biggest holes, this past season, was that they did not have another real threat at wide receiver other than Brian Thomas Jr. The rookie phenom was as good as anyone could have predicted; better, even.
But, other than Thomas, Jacksonville didn't have a consistent threat at the position. Injuries certainly didn't help this fact, but even when healthy, guys like Gabe Davis and Christian Kirk didn't cut it, nor did the others.
One of the very first signings Coen could help this Jaguars team make is to bring in one of his former wide receivers, Chris Godwin.
Chris Godwin could immediately open up the Jaguars' offense for Trevor Lawrence
The former Pro Bowler's season ended early last year due to injury, which allowed Bucs rookie Jalen McMillan to step in and earn valuable reps down the stretch. Becauce of the emerging McMillan, Tampa Bay may not feel the need to pay up for Godwin, especially after paying Mike Evans on an extension last offseason.
Godwin is known as a wide receiver who is excellent finding the soft spots and getting open. His hands are some of the most dependable in the game, as evidenced by his career-high 80.6 percent catch rate last year.
The soon-to-be free agent is also phenomenal in one of the lesser-known statistics out there, but it's certainly one of the most meaningful. His "success rate" was a staggering 72.6 percent last season. Success rate is defined by a reception gaining at least 40 percent of necessary yards on 1st down, 60 percent of necessary yards on 2nd down and 100 percent of necessary yards on 3rd down. He got the Bucs exactly what they needed on roughly three out of every four catches.
Godwin is a pro's pro, as they say, and would do wonders to open things up for not only Thomas, but the run game.
More Jaguars news:
Getting the defense's attention with two high-caliber wide receiver options might allow the Jaguars to finally get the run game going in the way they'd like to. Looking at how Coen spread the rock around last year between Rachaad White and Bucky Irving, fans have to wonder if there's similar potential between Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby.
Maybe it's not those two. Maybe the Jaguars go a different route. It's still early, of course, and Coen will have a big say in how this roster looks going forward.
But, adding Godwin will do some magic for the offense as a whole, allowing Lawrence to have more than one reliable option when it matters most.
In eight seasons, Godwin has totaled 579 receptions for 7,266 yards and 39 touchdowns.
