The Jacksonville Jaguars are off to a strong start to the tampering period, addressing one of their biggest needs this offseason. Less than an hour after teams were allowed to reach agreements with free agents, the Jags have signed cornerback Jourdan Lewis.

Michael DiRocco of ESPN reports that the Jaguars are signing Lewis to a three-year deal. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media later confirmed the move on Bluesky. The deal appears to be worth a total of $30 million with $20 million guaranteed.

A third-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2017, Lewis has appeared in 115 games with 64 starts, registering 10 interceptions and 44 passes defensed.

Lewis is the first notable signing for the Jaguars in 2025. They had re-signed offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen, but the former Cowboy is the first player they brought in from another team.

What's next for the Jaguars after signing Jourdan Lewis?

Jourdan Lewis is far from a Pro Bowler but will be in a position to help the Jacksonville Jaguars right off the bat. It's worth noting that the Jaguars needed a boundaries cornerback, and Lewis has mostly lined up throughout his career, so there's a chance he'll continue to line up inside, and the coaching staff will switch sophomore Jarrian Jones outside.

Either way, the Jaguars need to find an upgrade over Ronald Darby, who was the starter opposite Tyson Campbell last year and struggled so badly that he was benched in the second half of the season.

To nobody's surprise, Darby was released ahead of free agency, along with three other players, and Lewis will be the first in line to replace him. Signing Lewis was definitely a smart call, but because of where he plays, there's a chance he won't be the only cornerback the Jaguars will sign in free agency.

In fact, don't be surprised if Lewis is just the beginning. While Carlton Davis is off the table after joining the New England Patriots, D.J. Reed, Paulson Adebo, and Byron Murphy are yet to be signed, so there's a chance that Jacksonville could pursue one of them. This is a real possibility when you take into account that the Jags entered free agency with over $60 million in space.

Then again, the front office could wait until the draft to add another corner and address other needs in free agency. They could use help at wide receiver, and two starters on the interior offensive line. On top of that, Andre Cisco hit the open market, and the Jags will need to replace him.

The bottom line is that signign Jourdan Lewis isn't the kind of earth-shattering move that will turn the Jacksonville Jaguars into a Super Bowl contender. However, he should be able to help them get a bit better and boost their secondary regardless of the role he takes on.
