The Jacksonville Jaguars are dealing with a myriad of injuries in the preseason. The good news is that they've taken the step to bolster their depth across the trenches. Just one day after sending a sixth-round pick to the New York Giants in return for right guard Daniel Faalele, the Jags inked Timothy McKay.
The team announced that it signed McKay and released defensive tackle Quintin Bohann in a corresponding move. It's worth noting that this is McKay's second stint with the Jags. They had signed him earlier in August but waived him when they traded for Faalele. That may be a sign that Jacksonville likes him enough. Nevertheless, he remains a long shot to make the roster.
Best-case scenario, McKay lands on the practice squad. Bohanna, on the other hand, had an uphill battle to earn a roster spot, so his release didn't come as a surprise.
Why did the Jaguars sign Timothy McKay?
An undrafted free agent in 2025, Timothy McKay signed with the Washington Commanders. He spent his rookie season on their practice squad and has yet to appear in an NFL game.
Back at North Carolina State, McKay appeared in 56 contests, making 35 starts at offensive tackle and guard. The former Wolfpack was on the bottom half of the Washington depth chart in the summer. By releasing him in early August, the Commanders gave him the chance to latch onto another team next season. The issue is that even with injuries, the Jags may not have room for him.

Could Timothy McKay make the Jaguars roster?
Probably not. The Jaguars could carry nine or 10 offensive linemen next season. Walker Little, Anton Harrison, Ezra Cleveland, Emmanuel Pregnon, Robert Hainsay, Jonah Monheim, and Cole Van Lanen (who left the Physically Unable to Perform list) are locks to make the team. That's seven spots. Although Wyatt Milum is struggling, he will likely be the eighth. The recently traded Daniel Faalele could also get the cut.
Under normal circumstances, Patrick Mekari would also be a no-brainer choice to make the team. However, he just underwent surgery, and his availability for the season opener is in question. He could start the year on PUP, and the Jags could allocate his roster spot to someone else.
Timothy McKay will join a competition that includes Geron Christian, Chuma Edoga, and Sam Mustipher. While everything is possible, it's hard to see McKay get ahead of all of them after just arriving. Nevertheless, he will be given a legitimate chance to make a bid for a roster spot.
The truth is that the Timothy McKay signing doesn't truly move the needle, but the Jaguars are dealing with injuries across the line of scrimmage, so it doesn't hurt to bring in as many reinforcements as possible.
