The Jacksonville Jaguars desperately needed help on the offensive line in light of injuries. This is why it wasn't particularly surprising to see them acquire right guard Daniel Faalele from the New York Giants. Faalele immediately gives the Jags a boost up front, but you could make the case that Big Blue was the winner of the trade based on the fine print.

Jordan Schultz originally reported that the Jags gave up a Day 3 pick in return for Faalele. Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union has confirmed that it was a sixth-round pick.

New York signed Faalele in free agency to compete for the starting job at right guard, but he was stuck behind Francis Mauigoa and Jon Runyan on the depth chart, so you could make the case that they flipped a player who wasn't going to have a featured role next season.

The Daniel Faalele trade looks great for the NY Giants, but what about the Jaguars?

A fourth-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2022, Daniel Faalele started 32 consecutive games the past two years. Baltimore didn't miss him when he followed head coach John Harbaugh to the Giants, and understandably so. The former Minnesota Gopher gave up 30 sacks or more each of the past two years.

Coupled with the fact that first-round pick Francis Mauigoa is slated to start, Faalele became expendable. Had he stayed in New York the remainder of the preseason, there's a strong chance he would have been given the boot on cutdown day.

However, the Jaguars didn't hesitate to give up a sixth-rounder because they needed immediate help at right guard since Patrick Mekari, Chuma Edoga, and Walker Little are currently unavailable. This begs the question, what does Jacksonville expect from him, knowing that he failed to make an impact in NY?

Liam Coen told reporters after the trade that Faalele adds depth on the offensive line, noting that he brings ample experience in the offensive trenches, so you can make the case that it was a draft pick well spent.

The Jaguars should feel good about giving up a draft pick for Daniel Faalele

The Giants should definitely feel great about flipping Daniel Faalele for a sixth-rounder. But from the Jaguars' perspective, it was also a good deal. After all, Jacksonville got three compensatory picks in 2027, including a sixth-round selection when they let cornerback Greg Newsome sign (coincidentally) with the Giants.

It's worth noting that general manager James Gladstone had previously stated that all the compensatory picks the Jags got for 2027 after their dearth of moves in this year's free agency would help the team make future moves. The Daniel Faalele trade is proof of it.

Moreover, trading for Faalele won't count against the Jags' compensatory picks they're projected to get because he signed a veteran salary benefit contract with New York, as salary cap analyst Nick Korte explained on Twitter.

When you take everything into consideration, this was a great deal for the Giants, but the Jaguars and Daniel Faalele himself benefit greatly from it. They get the depth they needed on the offensive line, and he gets a fresh start and a chance to compete for a role, something he wasn't going to get in New York.
