The Jacksonville Jaguars were seemingly going to go into the regular season with Nick Mullens as the primary backup behind Trevor Lawrence. However, they just made a trade to bolster their quarterback room,
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media just broke the news that Jacksonville is acquiring quarterback Quinn Ewers from the Miami Dolphins. It was later reported that Miami and the Jags are swapping Day 3 draft picks.
While there's a chance Jacksonville could still keep Mullens, the arrival of Ewers could be a sign the team's brass isn't pleased with Mullens as QB2.
Updated: The Jaguars PR account on Twitter announced that the trade was for Ewers in return for a sixth-round selection pending his physical.

The Jaguars are trading for Quinn Ewers to bolster their QB depth
The Dolphins originally drafted Quinn Ewers to serve as the backup behind Tua Tagovailoa, but the regime that brought him to South Florida is no longer in place.
The news that Miami wanted to move on from the former Texas Longhorn doesn't come as a surprise, though. There had been rumors about the Phins looking somewhere else for a backup behind Malik Willis, who landed with them in free agency.
A seventh-round pick in the 2025 draft, Ewers went 55-of-83 for 622 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions in his rookie season. While those numbers don't pop off the stat sheet, the Jags liked him enough that they're taking a flyer on him. Coupled with the fact that he's still got three years left on his rookie deal, he could become an intriguing developmental prospect for Liam Coen.
It's also worth noting that Nick Mullens was entering his last year with the Jaguars, so even if he had stayed next season, there's a strong chance he wouldn't have returned in 2027. Meanwhile, Jacksonville can see if Ewers can be their long-term backup behind Lawrence.

How does the arrival of Quinn Ewers affect the Jaguars QB room?
Trevor Lawrence remains the starter in Duval, and nothing will change that. Nick Mullens was seemingly QB2 behind him, but if the Jaguars traded for Quinn Ewers, it's because he'll make their 53-man roster, which casts doubt on Mullens' future with the team. Similarly, they didn't want to run the risk of seeing another team claim him on the waiver wire.
Aside from Mullens, Joey Aguilar and Carter Bradley are in the Jacksonville quarterback room, but if they stay with the Jags, it will be on the practice squad.
The truth is that the arrival of Quinn Ewers suddenly shakes up the Jaguars' quarterback room. It will now be interesting to see what they do with Nick Mullens.
