With Liam Coen at the helm, the Jacksonville Jaguars have quickly gained an identity as a running team. Just two weeks into the season, they're leading the league in rushing yards. On top of that, Travis Etienne looks like the dynamic playmaker who played a role in the Jags' playoff run in 202.
This isn't surprising when you take into account that Coen turned the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into a running powerhouse during his lone season as their offensive coordinator. What's surprising is that his latest exchange with the local media has led to a reference of the classic Batman show.
Jaguars HC Liam Coen talks about the importance of mixing things up
Even though the Jaguars lost 31-27 to the Cincinnati Bengals, their running game wasn't the reason they couldn't seal the deal. If anything, it was one of their strength, and they'll continue to rely on the running back trio of Travis Etienne, Bhayshul Tuten (if he's good to go), and LeQuint Allen when they face the Houston Texans in Week 3.
Given that Houston has struggled to stop the Los Angeles Rams and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from running the ball, the subject came up ahead of the divisional bout. Specifically, Liam Coen was asked in his media availability session whether the screen game or the running game was more important. Here's what he had to say.
"Oh, man, that's a great question. Um, I think there's a huge balance there that you want to have. You look at Tampa, I think last week, having that balance was okay. They ran for 170 yards and also hit some screens that ended up being explosive plays and game-changing plays," Coen told reporters Wednesday (9:55 mark). So I think that's kind of the balance you're hunting up when you're talking about trying to neutralize darn good rushers and edge players to help these O-Line."
Coen continued, "That's another way that you're helping the offensive line to not just sit there and say, we're going to drop back 40 times and put these guys in a position to just go tee off and do what they do best. So it's the balance of, all right: Arc them, wham them, trap them, you know, crack 'em, screen them. Like that whole dynamic is something that we've got to be detailed and intentional about."
So far, nothing out of the ordinary, right? Coen is talking about the balance of running the ball through the inside gaps and relying on the screen game. This makes sense when you take into account that you can make your rushing attack as creative as you can be, and the more types of plays you use, the less predictable you'll be.
The Liam Coen exchange brought memories of the Batman TV series
By now, though, you may be wondering what Coen's comments have to do with the comment. And in case you didn't catch it, the way he described how his offensive linemen block brought memories of the campy Batman TV series show starring Adam West that used onomatopoeias whenever a fight took place on the show. H/T to Twitter user @CoachspeakIndex for pointing it out.

For comparison, here's a clip of the classic Batman show:
That's right. That's the late Cesar Romero portraying the Joker without shaving his mustache.
And that goes on to show just how much of an impact Liam Coen has had during his brief stint with the Jaguars. The rookie head coach has us talking about Batman.
