Even though first-round picks, especially those that go first overall, are expected to have an immediate impact, some need time to put it all together. That has been the case with Trevor Lawrence after the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted him with the top pick in 2021.
After facing several ups and downs throughout his career, Lawrence showed what he was capable of doing in 2025, playing like a top 10 quarterback to end the year and garnering votes for the MVP award.
But as good as Lawrence was, Boselli thinks that 2025 was just a sample of the quarterback Larwence can be.
Tony Boselli thinks Trevor Lawrence is the right QB to lead the Jaguars
Tony Boselli made an appearance on 1010 XL and stated that Trevor Lawrence is what you want in a quarterback, pointing out that he looked much better once he grew comfortable in the Liam Coen scheme.
"I think you look at Trevor. I think he being the quarterback gets the most attention, and rightfully so," Boselli said (6:11 mark). " It's a very difficult position, and you got to have that guy to go win it. But I think he's just kind of the picture of what a lot of guys did last year, and you can go down the list of guys who got better from day one when we showed up to where we are now, and we saw that in Trevor Lawrence throughout the year. He got comfortable in the system. He was healthy."
Boselli continued, " The guys around didn't play very well. He built that trust. I think bringing Jakobi in was just a shot in the arm just because of his consistency. I think he was a great model for the rest of that room on how to operate as a pro. We saw that uptick across the entire room, and Trevor's done a great job. He came and attacked this offseason, and I think where we are now, compared to last year, as an offense and as an individual is just so much further."
Later in the exchange, Boselli stated that Lawrence can be even better but needs to keep putting in the work.
"And I think we are just at the early stages of what Trevor Lawrence can become. And when I say that, is he had a great year last time. You know this as a player. It's one thing to get to that level where people are talking about you as one of the best at your position, but now, can you stay there? Can you do it year in, year out? Can you bring that consistency? Can you elevate your game even higher? Because at that position, especially the quarterback position, it's not just about elevating your play, but can you elevate the guys around you?" Boselli said.
"And we definitely believe that Trevor's that guy, and looking forward to him to continue to take those steps and continue to become a better quarterback."
Lawrence got off to a slow start to 2025, but some of that stemmed from having to spend the offseason recovering from a shoulder injury he sustained the year prior and learning Coen's system, the most complex in his career.
Heading into his second season under Coen, Lawrence is 100 percent healthy and has a stronger grasp of the offense. That should allow him to pick up where he left off last season.
The Jaguars have never doubted Trevor Lawrence
The Jaguars haven't always put Trevor Lawrence in a position to succeed. Hiring Urban Meyer in 2021 was one of the most baffling decisions they made. Similarly, the franchise hasn't always given him a good supporting cast. Having said that, they had never stopped believing him.
The biggest proof is that the Jags gave Lawrence a multi-year extension in 2024. A new regime took over the following year, and instead of bringing its own guy, it worked with No. 16.
It took a while, but Trevor Lawrence has flourished into the quarterback the Jaguars envisioned. Next, he needs to lead the team to the promised land.
