The Jacksonville Jaguars signed wide receiver Jake Bobo to an offer sheet with the expectation that the Seattle Seahawks wouldn't match. Given the amount of the deal they gave him (two years, $7 million), it didn't seem like the Hawks were going to match. But they did, and Bobo is now back in Emerald City.
That leaves the Jags back at square one, still needing to add depth at receiver. Fortunately for them, a familiar option is still available in the open market.
The Jaguars could re-sign Tim Patrick after missing out on Jake Bobo
The Jaguars traded for Tim Patrick just before the 2025 season began because they needed reinforcements at receiver. While his numbers didn't pop off the stat sheet, he routinely came through when called upon.
But after a solid season in Duval, Patrick was shown the door. This is understandable when you take into account that he was the fifth option behind Travis Hunter, Brian Thomas Jr., Parker Washington, and Parker Washington. On the other hand, his 6-foot-5 frame gave the Jacksonville wide receiver corps the size they needed in the red zone. Moreover, the former Utah Ute routinely showed a willingness to block.
Two weeks into free agency, Patrick remains unsigned, so it would make sense for the Jags to bring him back after missing out on Jake Bobo. And that's the thing, like Bobo, Patrick is a depth piece on offense that would play a substantial amount of snaps on special teams.
Knowing that Patrick hasn't garnered much interest in free agency thus far, it's fair to assume that he won't command a big salary, making him an affordable fallback to Bobo. As of this writing, Jacksonville has $5.9 million in space, so he would fit in the team's budget.
On the other hand, general manager James Gladston would need to either restructure a few deals or release one or two players to make room for Patrick and later sign the rookie class.
Why Tim Patrick could benefit from another season with the Jaguars
The Jaguars had enough time to evaluate Tim Patrick even though he joined the team just before the regular season started. That said, it would be interesting to see if he could be even better if he were to spend a full offseason with the Jags.
It's also worth noting that Patrick has been relatively healthy after missing 2022 and 2023 with season-ending injuries. When you add it all up, it would make sense for Jacksonville to re-sign him for at least one more season.
The one thing potentially preventing the Jaguars from signing Patrick after losing Jake Bobo to the Seattle Seahawks is that they may want to wait after the draft to add any veterans to the roster.
But if Tim Patrick is still available by then, and the Jags still need depth at receiver, arranging a reunion should be a legitimate option.
