The Jacksonville Jaguars might be in the middle of one of the worst seasons in franchise history, but at least they can take solace in the fact they have quarterback Trevor Lawrence locked up long-term. Unfortunately, because 2024 is a giant gut punch, Lawrence may have played his final snap this year.

Lawrence was beat up in a close loss against the Philadelphia Eagles, suffering a shoulder injury that sidelined him for their Week 10 game against the Minnesota Vikings. Mac Jones will start in his stead against the mighty Vikings defense.

Lawrence is expected to miss some time as he heals up. However, according to Mike Silver and Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the injury might be so severe that Lawrence ends up missing the rest of the 2024 season as he tries to get healthy for next year.

The Jaguars' season was on life support, and it will be officially dead and buried if Lawrence is unable to go. This is likely the right move for all involved, at it behooves no one to keep Lawrence active for meaningless games.

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence could miss rest of 2024 after shoulder injury

Lawrence has completed 61.3% of his passes while throwing 11 touchdowns against six interceptions this season and running for an additional three scores. While his passer rating is almost equal to what he put up in 2024, his QBR of 61.1 is the highest in the highly-touted signal-caller's career.

While Lawrence's relative stagnation has made this year disappointing for many fans of No. 16, he is also doing this with an offensive line in transition, a banged-up group of skill position players, and coaching that will almost assuredly be shown the door at the end of the season.

This decision could be the best move in the long term for Jacksonville. There's no use in putting one of the few cornerstones on this roster in the line of fire for one of the worst teams in the league while injured. Winning an extra three games is not worth it in the long run.

The Jaguars can start next year with Lawrence at quarterback, a premium draft pick, and a new coaching staff that will likely be brought in with the sole purpose of taking Lawrence from good to great. Until then, fans may need to prepare for a difficult end to an already brutal 2024 season.
