Things could go from bad to worse for the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10. They're currently 2-7 and they'll probably be without quarterback Trevor Lawrence when they face the Minnesota Vikings.
After a rough start to the season, Lawrence has been playing much better in recent weeks. However, he suffered a shoulder injury in the Week 9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Following the game, he told the press corps that he was sore, so it didn't seem like a big deal.
Update: Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Trevor Lawrence is dealing with an AC sprain and won't be suiting up vs. the Vikings. Mac Jones gets the start in Week 10.
On the days preceding the game, No. 16 has been a limited participant in practice ahead of the Minnesota game, and head coach Doug Pederson isn't optimistic he'll suit up. To nobody's surprise, he's listed as questionable for the game.
If Lawrence is unavailable, Mac Jones will make his first start as a member of the Jaguars. A first-round pick in the 2021 draft, the former Alabama product made the playoffs and led the New England Patriots to the playoffs as a rookie. However, changes in the coaching staff affected his development to the point where he was benched several times the past two years.
The Pats decided they had seen enough of Jones and traded him to Jacksonville in exchange for a sixth-round selection earlier this year. While he's mostly seen mop-up duty in 2024, the Jacksonville native had a strong preseason, completing 73.1 percent of his throws for 421 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. If he does get the nod, C.J. Beathard will be the primary backup.
Beathard signed with the Jags in 2021 and was Lawrence's backup the past three years. However, he competed with Jones for the No. 2 job in the offseason and got his walking papers before the start of the season after suffering a groin injury. Because he was released with an injury settlement, the team's brass had to wait for the duration of his recovery plus three weeks to re-sign him.
The Miami Dolphins, in need of depth at the quarterback position, signed Beathard to the practice squad in October. But with Lawrence's status in doubt for Week 8, the Jags signed him from the Phins' practice squad to their active roster.
Will Trevor Lawrence undergo shoulder injury this season?
Heading into the game, there was chatter about Trevor Lawrence getting shoulder surgery and shutting down for the season. This makes sense when you take into account that the Jaguars probably won't make the playoffs and there's not much else to play for. Add the fact that No. 16 doesn't seemingly have a great rapport with head coach Doug Pederson and it looks like the best course of action.
Having said that, there are no reports that Lawrence will indeed get season-ending surgery, as of this writing. Speculation began when Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that the fourth-year quarterback was weighing his options.
Later, Pederson said that it would be up to the training staff to make the decision, but there are no further updates for the moment.
This means that Lawrence may not play against the Vikings but would return at some point of the season.
