Is Trevor Lawrence playing today? Latest injury update for the Jaguars QB in Week 14
Week 14 had no shortage of storylines surrounding the Jacksonville Jaguars but the biggest one was arguably the dirty hit linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair delivered on Trevor Lawrence. While the fourth-year quarterback lay on the ground, a scuffle between players from both teams ensured.
Ultimately, Lawrence was carted off the field while Al-Shaair, along with Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones were disqualified from the game. Although the cheap shot earned widespread scorn from around the league, Houston Texans vouched for his player, pointing out that Jacksonville overreacted and blew things out of proportion.
Surprisingly, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson believes his team reacted the right way, noting that they're not looking to hurt other players.
In the aftermath of the brawl, Al-Shaair got a three-game suspension. He appealed it but was upheld. On the other hand, Lawrence entered concussion protocol, which begs the question, what's his status for Week 14?
Will Trevor Lawrence play vs. the Titans in Week 14?
Early in the week, Doug Pederson told the local media that Trevor Lawrence was in concussion protocol but refused to provide further details. Then, the team announced that it was placing the former Clemson Tiger on Injured Reserve, meaning that he would need to miss at least four games before he can return to action.
Four games would mean Lawrence would be eligible to return for the finale, but Pederson says that the quarterback will get a procedure to repair his non-throwing shoulder once he clears protocol. This will effectively end his season.
"His health is probably the most important," Pederson told the local media when discussing the reasons behind placing Lawrence on IR. "Obviously, the reason for IR, the injury from Sunday, it's not that. It's more of the shoulder, where we are in our season. A chance for him to get healthy right now, as he looks into the offseason and next season as well, getting healthy. The injury Sunday doesn't help, right?"
Pederson continued, "But I think it's the right decision right now to go ahead and just shut him down and let him get fully healed. Clear the protocol first, then tackle the other injury later on. That's our main focus right now, to make sure he's, he's 100 percent and get him healthy and get himself ready."
Lawrence originally hurt his shoulder in Week 9. He missed two games but returned to the lineup in Week 13 despite the fact that he was still dealing with pain from the injury.
Without anything left to play, getting surgery is the best course of action for Trevor Lawrence. It's uncertain when he will clear protocol, but by opting to get the procedure as soon as he can, he'll be able to start his rehab and be ready to return at an earlier time next year.
