Coming off a 17-10 win over the Houston Texans, the Jacksonville Jaguars will have a chance to start a winning streak when they face the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4. They're currently a three-point underdog, though, and coming out on top won't be a walk in the park.
After all, the Niners are finding ways to win despite the fact that they've been dealing with injuries across the roster. Early in the season, tight end George Kittle landed on Injured Reserve. Pass rusher Nick Bosa followed suit after Week 3.
But even without Bosa and Kittle, San Francisco is still dangerous. On the other hand, the Jags have a few things going in their favor.
The Jaguars have enough talent to go toe-to-toe with the 49ers
The Jaguars have one of the best defenses in the NFL. They rank first in takeaways and interceptions with nine and seven, respectively. On top of that, Josh Hines-Allen leads the league in pressures with 19.
On offense, Jacksonville has a dynamic backfield tandem in Travis Etienne and Bhayshul Tuten. It will be up to the coaching staff to put an emphasis on pounding the rock. Similarly, Trevor Lawrence and his receivers will need to be on the same page and cut down on the number of drops.
For his part, head coach Liam Coen says that the team was hurt early in the week but feels that they're ready to go Sunday.
"I think we were a little kind of banged up early in the week, and just in terms of right getting some of the soreness out playing two weeks of kind of down to the wire ball in a physical game last Sunday," Coen said (1:34 mark). "So we try to take care of these guys a little bit throughout the week, but, man, they practiced hard again. I mean, they practiced their tail off. It was hot as heck out here, but they practiced hard.
Coen continued, "We did connect on a few down-the-field throws to some of those guys. That was nice to see, and like we've talked about it, it has to occur in practice for it to truly come to life on Sundays. So excited about the opportunity to have a lot of confidence in these guys to go out and make plays on Sunday."
