Before the Jacksonville Jaguars can think about the playoffs, they'll need to face one last hurdle when they play the Tennessee Titans. Sure, the Jags already qualified for the postseason tournament, but the outcome of the game will have a massive impact on the seeding.
With a win, Jacksonville will seize the AFC South and clinch one of the top three seeds in the conference. But a loss will allow the Houston Texans to get ahead in the division race. For that reason, the Jaguars will want to come out on top.
Head coach Liam Coen, for his part, is trying to downplay the stakes of the game and keep the team focused on the task at hand.
"I think it sometimes can almost help where you're a little bit, I don't want to say naive to what's going on, but you're just really focused on the daily, hourly, game-by-game improvement," Coen told the media on New Year's Day (0:17 mark). "That's all we can really focus on right now."
Coen continued, "That's been the message, 'Hey, let's get our best effort, mindset, execution, preparation, all of that this week to go 1-0.' And it's a division opponent, a team that obviously doesn't probably like us too much. And that's just the way it goes in Division, right? And that's just the way those games go, and you're excited about these opportunities to play meaningful games in January and in December."
Of course, it helps that the Jaguars are a 12.5-point favorite against the rival Tennessee. Moreover, the game will be held at EverBank Stadium. And if that wasn't enough, Jacksonville will get center Robert Hainsey and running back Bhayshul Tuten back for the game.
When you add it all up, Jacksonville has no excuse not to come out on top. And with this in mind, here's how you can watch this AFC South showdown in Week 18.
