Following one of the worst seasons in franchise history, the Jacksonville Jaguars didn't hesitate to draft Trevor Lawrence first overall. From the get-go, expectations were absurdly high, and understandably so. After an impressive collegiate career, the former Clemson Tiger was dubbed a generational talent and the highest-rated prospect since Andrew Luck in 2012.

That's as good a compliment as you'll ever get, but it also put immense amounts of pressure on Lawrence before he even took a snap in the NFL. Compounding the issue was that Urban Meyer, who was underqualified as anyone can be, was his head coach in his NFL rookie campaign. Not surprisingly, No. 16 struggled to get going. The good news is that he's since improved substantially.

That said, Lawrence has had several ups and downs throughout his career, and it wasn't until Liam Coen became his head coach in 2025 that he truly took off. The good news is that as good as he was last year, he could be even better as the Jaguars are setting him up to have sustained success.

How have the Jaguars helped Trevor Lawrence?

That's easy to answer; Trevor Lawrence will have in 2026 what's arguably the best supporting cast of his career. Sure, he also had lots of help in 2022, but that team wasn't nearly as talented. The Jaguars are stacked at receiver with Parker Washington, Jakobi Meyers, Brian Thomas Jr., and Travis Hunter.

The tight end room couldn't be any better, with Brenton Strange, Nate Boerkircher, and Tanner Koziol expected to take on bigger roles next season. Meanwhile, the offensive line has both talent and depth at all positions, so it should be able to keep Lawrence's jersey clean. That said, the help he's getting goes beyond his supporting cast.

The Jaguars are making an effort to fix last year's stink, the running game. If they can effectively pound the football, opposing defenses won't be able to have an extra defender drop back in coverage, which will, in turn, present better matchups for Lawrence.

The defense, for its part, has enough talent to prevent opposing teams from reaching the end zone and create enough turnovers to give Lawrence and the offense extra possessions.

But as good as Lawrence's team around him is, the Jaguars' biggest help will come in the form of coaching.

Liam Coen will keep pushing Trevor Lawrence

During his first season with the Jaguars, Liam Coen proved that he knows what buttons to press to get the most out of his players, but he's also shown that he cares about them. That's the perfect balance you want in the head coach. Sure, it took Trevor Lawrence a bit to get a good grasp of his system, but once he did, he played the best season of his career.

Lawrence is now entering his second year under Coen, so he should have a much better hold of his offense. Coupled with the fact that he doesn't have to recover from injuries, unlike last year, he should get off to a strong start to 2025.

So yes, the Jaguars have done enough to put Trevor Lawrence in a position to succeed, and nobody should act surprised once he reaches the top echelon of NFL quarterbacks.
