Grade the pitch: Jaguars trade Brian Thomas Jr. to Giants for top-tier D-Lineman

Landing this trade could be just as good as getting back into the first round.

The Jacksonville Jaguars' first day of the legal tampering went out with a bang and a whimper, but that could be great news for Day 2. With a lot of star players headed to new markets or re-signed by their home teams, the number of difference makers available is drastically smaller. This gives James Gladstone an opportunity to make a splash move that fills a high-priority need and offloads a questionable asset before his bill becomes due.

Recently, it was floated that Brian Thomas Jr. could get traded to the New York Giants in a deal that would be a win-win for both squads. In New York's case, BTJ would give them a solid wideout who could play alongside Malik Nabers and create matchup nightmares for opposing defensive coordinators. For Jacksonville, the prospective deal could net them a great second-round pick or a proven player who addresses a glaring weakness on the roster.

As the Giants enter a new era, there's a three-time Pro Bowler on their defense who might benefit from a change of scenery. Since there aren't many moves they can make because of their cap situation, the Jags should swing for the fences and get this deal done.

If the Jaguars trade BTJ to the New York Giants, they must target Dexter Lawrence

When looking at Jacksonville's current needs, neither side of the line of scrimmage is built to dominate the franchise's opponents in 2026. On the flipside, the team's wide receiver room is the best it's been since the Blake Bortles era. When BTJ plays up to his potential, he's one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. Unfortunately, he rarely performs at that level when Trevor Lawrence is throwing him the ball.

Lawrence and Thomas' disconnect presents a long-term problem since No. 16 has already received his big-money deal. With the Jags already experiencing the consequences of various players' paydays arriving at the same time, it doesn't make sense to jeopardize the franchise's future on the field by extending a young player who's streaky and inconsistent.

This is where Dexter Lawrence comes in. The 29-year-old defensive tackle is expected to be a $26.96 million cap hit for the Giants. As John Harbaugh prepares to establish his culture and lay the foundation for the future, he might not be too high on dedicating this much space to an aging interior defender. For comparison's sake, Sexy Dexy's dead cap number is only $13.92 million.

Wait! Before you click away in disgust, remember that the Jaguars haven't restructured Trevor Lawrence, Josh Hines-Allen, or Walker Little's contracts yet. Touching up existing contracts is a common tactic used by front offices to navigate the salary cap mechanism and bring in major contributors whenever they're pressed for cash.

So, a player-for-player trade between New York and Jacksonville is actually quite realistic and beneficial. The Giants could get Jaxson Dart another weapon as he enters Year 2 of his career, while the Jags could procure a world-famous pocket pusher who ruins games for the offensive lines across from him.

Most importantly, James Gladstone would secure one of the best veteran players in the NFL without having to spend a first-round pick he doesn't have.

Why it makes sense for the Jaguars to trade for Dexter Lawrence

From my vantage point, it feels like James Gladstone's been trying to recover from the heavy price he paid to trade for the No. 2 overall pick (also known as Travis Hunter) since the night he filed the transaction. The generational prospect was supposed to address two needs at once (WR2 and man corner), but that plan changed in real time throughout Hunter's rookie season.

The lack of a first-round pick in 2026 prevents Jacksonville from upgrading the roster at an affordable price tag. Unfortunately, Travis Etienne and Devin Lloyd's official departures from the team don't help things either.

Final Grade: After taking everything into consideration, I think swapping BTJ for Dexter Lawrence would earn Gladstone a B+. It beefs up the defensive line, prevents the team from taking a huge financial risk, and works around the lack of a first-round pick this year. If the front office gets this deal done, they'll be heading into the NFL Draft with a lot more confidence.
