Just when it looked like the Jacksonville Jaguars weren't going to trade Brian Thomas Jr., a new report makes it clear that they're open to the possibility of moving the third-year wide receiver. Just before the start of free agency, Jonathan Jones reported that the Jags probably weren't going to entertain inquiries about Thomas.
However, it looks like Jacksonville isn't completely opposed to the idea, based on a more recent scoop.
The Jaguars could trade Brian Thomas Jr. to the Giants
Connor Hughes of SNYTV broke the news that the Jaguars are listening to offers for Brian Thomas Jr., noting that they and the Giants explored the possibility of getting a deal done last year, but Jacksonville wasn't willing to pull the trigger at the time.
However, the Jags' stance has since changed, opening the door for a potential trade.
The Giants are in dire need of help at receiver after losing Wan'Dale Robinson to the Tennessee Titans early in the tempering period. They may not have a better option than the man they passed on in the 2024 draft to select Malik Nabers.
While Nabers has turned into a game-changer for Big Blue, he tore his ACL last season. He may be able to bounce back and be ready for the 2026 opener, but it wouldn't hurt New York to add another playmaker to ensure sophomore quarterback Jaxson Dart has enough weapons at his disposal.
Enter Thomas, who's coming off a season in which he struggled with inconsistency and drops. On the other hand, it wasn't that long ago that the former LSU Tiger took the league by storm, registering 1,282 yards with 10 catches on 82 receptions.
Couple that with the fact that Thomas still has three years left on his rookie deal, and teams probably won't stop making calls about him anytime soon, even if the Jags aren't currently shopping him.
Would it make sense for the Jaguars to trade Brian Thomas Jr.?
Even though the Jaguars have Parker Washington and Jakobi Meyers in the fold, you can never have too many playmakers. That's a roundabout way to say that they're better off keeping Brian Thomas Jr. for the next three years unless a club makes them an offer they can't refuse.
Sure, Thomas had a down year, but progress isn't linear, and there's a chance he'll bounce back in 2026. Moreover, he's set to have cap hits of $3.9 million and $4.6 million in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
It's possible that anything less than a second-round pick, along with another mid-round pick, won't get a deal done. On the other hand, the Giants hold the No. 5 pick, and it's hard to see them giving up in return for Thomas. Perhaps they could give up a player.
Dexter Lawrence makes sense, but would it make sense for either side, given that he's going to have a massive cap hit next season ($26.9 million), and the Giants seem to be high on him?
Maybe if New York offers a second and a third in 2026, the Jaguars may be willing to trade Brian Thomas Jr. Until then, don't expect the third-year wideout to change uniforms.
