Emmanuel Pregnon is a perfect fit for Jaguars' nasty brand of football

While the Jacksonville Jaguars were severely criticized for most of their 2026 draft class, they earned widespread recognition for taking offensive guard Emmanuel Pregnon with their second pick in the third round, the 88th overall.

At the time, Pregnon was considered to be the steal of Round 3 because he had massive upside and was projected to be a starter at the NFL level. Although the former Oregon Duck has only made one start with the Jags, he's most definitely lived up to expectations.

The physical streak that made Pregnon a top-draft prospect was on full display against the Browns. On top of that, he showcased superb technique and fundamentals. Simply put, the rookie hog mollie has proven to be a fit for Liam Coen's nasty brand of football.

Emmanuel Pregnon fits the Jaguars' vision

Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski met with the local media ahead of the Week 2 game against the Denver Broncos. While he gushed about Emmanuel Pregnon's physicality, he also talked about all the work he puts in behind the scenes.

"The physical stuff probably pops out on the tape. My answer is probably the coach-speak stuff, the stuff you see behind the scenes, which is him in here late working, him meeting extra with coach [Trevor] Mendelson all the time," Udinski told reporters (10:56 mark). "Those two guys do a fantastic job going through the game plan, understanding the details of why we're running certain plays or certain run concepts, or how we're going to hit certain blocks, what his footwork is, what his technique is, and how things would be communicated."

Udinski continued, "He's a guy that wants to be right and wants to understand the details of the different things that we're putting into a game plan, or the different adjustments that Trevor may get to at the line of scrimmage, and to have that type of approach as a rookie. Really, the process that he has every single week to stick to learning the things he needs to learn to try to understand a defense, understand how we're attacking defense, understand our adjustments off of that."

Early in the offseason, it didn't seem like Pregnon would be a Week 1 starter. After all, Ezra Cleveland was firmly entrenched at left guard, while sophomore Wyatt Milum was going to challenge Patrick Mekari for the right guard job. However, things took a quick turn in training camp.

Mekari wasn't able to recover from a back injury he was (and is still) dealing with, and Milum wasn't able to supplant him. That led the coaching staff to move Cleveland to the right side and plug Pregnon at left tackle.

Based on the Jaguars' offensive success against the Browns, they made the right call. Then again, Pregnon was only able to make the most of his chance because he was ready to roll when pressed into action.

The Jaguars have an intangibly rich player in Emmanuel Pregnon

Since James Gladstone became the general manager for the Jacksonville Jaguars, he's made an effort to add intangibly rich players, players who are gritty and love the game of football. Head coach Liam Coen, for his part, wanted to turn the Jags into a gritty and nasty team from the moment he was hired in 2025. Emmanuel Pregnon checks all the boxes. Not only is he a mauler, but makes sure to put in the work to ensure he'll succeed on game day as well.

If Patrick Mekari had stayed healthy or Wyatt Milum had seized the starting job at right guard, there's a chance Pregnon would not have been a Week 1 starter. However, he's simply too talented and such a consummate pro that he wouldn't have stayed on the sidelines for too long.

The truth is that Emmanuel Pregnon is far from the only Jaguars' draft pick who's already making an impact in 2026, but he's probably the one who's earning the most praise, and deservedly so.
