The Jacksonville Jaguars have a top-10 quarterback in Trevor Lawrence. Nobody will refute that after his banner season in 2025. Having said that, the depth behind him leaves a bit to be desired.
Nick Mullens and Carter Bradley are the backups behind No. 16 on the depth chart, and both have been somewhat underwhelming in the offseason program. Granted, most teams have issues at quarterback once you pass three starters. However, Jacksonville could be in trouble if Lawrence has to miss significant time.
This has led a prominent local reporter to make an intriguing trade suggestion to take care of the Jags' depth concerns.
The Jaguars are dubbed a fit for Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson
John Shipley of Sports Illustrated said on his podcast that Anthony Richardson could be a solution to the Jaguars' depth issues at quarterback, noting that Liam Coen could scheme some designed runs for the fourth-year passer.
"I'm no leading fan of the Gators of the University of Florida, but I have often had the opinion that the Indianapolis Colts are at times subhuman. However, Anthony Richardson, why the hell not?" Shipley suggested (38:17 mark). "Let's trade a Day 3 pick for Anthony Richardson. I think Liam has the offensive mind to get something out of his dual credibility. I'm not saying he'd be good as a passer, I think Liam would be able."
Shipley continued, "Like Liam schemed up good quarterback runs stuff with Trevor. I think he'd get to do it with Anthony Richardson. It'd obviously be short -term, and then if he looks semi-competent, he signs elsewhere next offseason. You get a comp pick, yeah?"
Logue argues that Richardson could cash in if he thrived, adding that trading for him would be a much better option than Will Howard.
"What you're chasing is like a Malik Willis path, right? He looks great for three days or three games, and then goes to sign a huge extension or huge contract elsewhere. So I think Anthony Richardson definitely fits that mold better than anyone else available, certainly better than Will Howard. Like, I think if Trevor was out for a decent amount of time, then yeah, I'd be like a fourth-rounder, fifth-rounder, sure, go for it," Logue said.
For context, Anthony Richardson lost the starting job to Daniel Jones in 2025. Earlier this year, he requested a trade but ultimately remained with the Indianapolis Colts.
The fourth-overall pick in 2023, Richardson was raw coming out of college. Nevertheless, he had massive upside. Unfortunately, the former Florida Gator was inconsistent early in his stint with Indy. On top of that, he's dealt with a handful of injuries the past few years. When you add it all up, his days with the Colts could be numbered.
Why the Jaguars should trade for Anthony Richardson
A trade would probably take place only if Trevor Lawrence went down. Then again, quarterbacks are always one injury away from leaving the field, so the possibility is higher than zero. With that out of the way, it'd make sense to trade for Anthony Richardson if No. 16 were expected to miss extended time.
Whether it was a fourth or fifth-round pick, it would be worth it, as the Jags would get a quarterback who can thrive on design plays. The threat of taking off would most definitely make him a viable backup for Lawrence.
Of course, if Lawrence only got sat out a couple games, Jacksonville could roll with Nick Mullens. He won't carry the team on his shoulders for a whole season but is a fine short-term fix who can take deep shots.
The truth is that the idea of trading for Anthony Richardson is compelling, but it should only be considered if the worst-case scenario came to fruition. Until then, it's hard to see the Jaguars making any tweaks to their quarterback room in the foreseeable future.
