The Jacksonville Jaguars have several roster holes even after coming out of free agency with a promising haul. But the one position they don't have to worry about is quarterback due to the presence of Trevor Lawrence. The same cannot be said about the Indianapolis Colts, who have done several things to find stability behind center but nothing sticks. In fact, their latest move at the position shows just how desperate they are.

Indy signed former first-round pick Daniel Jones to compete with incumbent Anthony Richardson for the starting job at quarterback. This move would inspire confidence if it weren't for the fact that the Colts brought in a quarterback bust who got benched last year in favor of undrafted free agent Tommy DeVito.

Not long after Jones got demoted, he signed to the Minnesota Vikings practice squad, where he spent the rest of the 2024 season. Now, there's a chance the Duke product benefitted from taking a step back and watching. However, Indianapolis shouldn't expect him to suddenly turn into an All-Pro and come away with the starting job. This is to say that things could get ugly.

Why are the Colts signing Daniel Jones to compete with Anthony Richardson?

The Colts thought that Richardson would be the long-term answer at quarterback, but that hasn't been the case two years after they made him the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft. Granted, the former Florida Gator was always a raw talent coming out of college but the Colts knew that. And instead of letting him develop, they threw him into the wolves.

Richardson was pressed into action as a rookie and flashed before he suffered a season-ending injury. Things didn't get much better in 2024. He dealt with back spasms throughout the year and was inconsistent when he suited up. That led to his benching, and general manager Chris Ballard's later admission that the team had mismanaged the quarterback's development.

Eventually, Richardson got back into the starting lineup but once again struggled, which is why the Colts signed Daniel Jones.

Now, Richardson definitely deserves blame for not doing anything he could to thrive, but Indianapolis is also at fault because it didn't put its quarterback in a position to succeed. Either way, the way they've been handling the quarterback situation doesn't inspire confidence.

The Jaguars have a much better quarterback than Daniel Jones

Trevor Lawrence has been inconsistent throughout his career, but he's never been benched. Surprisingly, it wasn't long ago that he was compared to Daniel Jones. On a surface level, Danny Dimes was the better quarterback of the two (but only slightly). However, a closer look revealed just how underwhelming he's been aside from 2023.

Add the fact that Jones is now playing on his third team in a two-year span and those comparisons are laughable.

While the Jaguars are doing whatever they can to help Trevor Lawrence put it all together, Daniel Jones finds himself attempting to fend off Anthony RIcahrdson to salvage his NFL career.
