Just before the June 1 deadlines, rumors are swirling that the Jacksonville Jaguars could trade for A.J. Brown. While the move doesn't make sense on paper, it shouldn't be ruled out because general manager James Gladstone has a history of taking bold swings. Having said that, Adam Schefter of ESPN doesn't think that the three-time Pro Bowl receiver will land with the Jags.
Schefter is certain that Brown will get traded after June 1, but he remains convinced that he'll land with the team he's been linked to the most throughout the offseason.
The Eagles will tentatively trade A.J. Brown to the Patriots
Adam Schefter believes that the New England Patriots will trade for A.J. Brown despite the fact that other teams have emerged as potential suitors in recent weeks.
"Well, it now feels like the closer we get to June 1, the more A.J. Brown chatter is starting to pick up, and we're starting to hear about other teams entering the mix," Schefter said on his podcast (10:10 mark). "I was on a Philadelphia radio show this morning, they brought up the idea that the Rams could be getting back in, they brought up the idea that the Jaguars could be getting back in. All of a sudden, that's interesting. I will remain in the camp that we've been in for the last six, seven weeks, which is that I still think he's getting traded."
Schefter continued, "I still think he's getting traded on or shortly after June 1. I still think that the New England Patriots are going away the lead contender to land AJ Brown this offseason. I don't care what other teams come up in connection with AJ Brown trade talks between now and June 1. Don't care about what other conversations there are. These other teams have had their opportunities throughout the offseason."
Later in the exchange, Schefter states that Brown will reunite with Mike Vrabel in New England after other clubs missed their chance to land him.
"There were conversations with the Rams that did not result in a deal. I don't know about Jacksonville. I don't even know where that's coming from, but I still think that the New England Patriots make the most sense, and I still think that when all is said and done, as we've said, that the Patriots will wind up agreeing to a deal that will land AJ Brown in New England and reunite him with Mike Vrabel, as those two men move forward to me. That's what I'm waiting to see have happen," Schefter said.
Throughout the offseason, the Pats have been linked to Brown, and the reason they're waiting for the June 1 deadline to pull the trigger is that the Philadelphia Eagles will then be able to spread the dead cap in 2026 and 2027.
Why the Patriots update is great news for the Jaguars
You should never say never, but the truth is that acquiring A.J. Brown simply doesn't make sense for the Jaguars. Already, they have a well-rounded wide receiver corps. While Brown would most definitely be an upgrade, the Jags would be giving up substantial resources to land him, probably a second or third-round pick, and maybe Brian Thomas Jr. On top of that, they would have to take on his deal.
The good news is that, based on Adam Schefter's update, it doesn't seem like Brown will land with Jacksonville. That could allow them to address another position that does need reinforcements, perhaps the pass rush or the interior defensive line.
The Jaguars make a last-minute push for A.J. Brown, but the closer we get to June 1, the Patriots are becoming his most obvious destination.
