With their season opener just around the corner, questions remain about whether the Jacksonville Jaguars will be able to extend Parker Washington before they face the Cleveland Browns in Week 1. Both sides seemingly want to get a deal done but were rumored to be more than $10 million apart on his annual compensation.
The good news is that the Jags are willing to continue contract talks into the regular season if they can't reach an agreement. But based on a recent update, it may not come down to that.
The Jaguars could reach an extension with Parker Washington before Week 1
Adam Schefter of ESPN made an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show and stated that the Jags and Parker Washington could get an extension done before their season opener against Cleveland.
"The Lions have shown a propensity to do deals in-season, so maybe Sam [Laporta] gets done into the season a little bit," Schefter said. "But I think there'll be some extensions. Parker, Washington, and Jacksonville. I think there'll be some extensions that get done by the time the opening games roll around."
Schefter probably thinks that Jacksonville can extend Washington because he's connected, and sources close to the situation have told him both sides are beginning to touch base. Then again, this is just a conjecture, and it's possible that they won't reach an agreement.
On the other hand, the fact that Schefter thinks Washington could sign a new deal before the opener is most definitely something worth keeping an eye on.
Either way, Washington has done enough to earn a new deal. Although the former Penn State Nittany Lion spent his first two seasons in Duval behind Christian Kirk, he took off once he got a featured role in 2025, registering 58 receptions for 807 yards with five touchdowns.
When you factor in that salaries at receiver have increased since the end of 2025 — Michael Wilson just got a three-year deal worth $75 million — it's easy to see Washington would want top-market compensation.

The Jaguars will have checked a massive box with Parker Washington
While Parker Washington is far from the only Jaguars player entering a contract year, he's without a doubt the most important one. Safety Antonio Johnson is also out there, but there haven't been reports about the team's brass making an effort to re-sign him before 2027. Heck, nobody would bat an eye if Jacksonville lets him walk in free agency next year.
Circling back to Washington, he's arguably Trevor Lawrence's most trusted target, and he's one a pivotal piece on offense. This doesn't mean he's irreplaceable; the Jags would still have a wide arsenal at receiver even if he left next year. That said, their offense is better when No. 11 is on the field. Couple that with the fact that he's the best returner on the team, and it's easy to see why retaining him is among the team's biggest priorities.
The truth is that the sooner the Jaguars take care of Parker Washington, the faster they'll prevent it from becoming a question that will linger the rest of the year, so they're better off checking off that box as soon as possible.
