Where do the Jaguars go from here? 4 questions to be answered
Where do the Jaguars go from here?
After only 11 games, the Jaguars have already been eliminated from playoff contention. It’s really not going to get any better for the franchise this year and they should just start planning for next year. There are many questions to be answered that will determine the future of this team, and rightfully so, it’s on the 27th anniversary of the franchise.
What is their approach going to be to the quarterback situation?
The Jaguars remain unsure of who their starting quarterback is and they have had three different quarterbacks—Gardner Minshew, Jake Luton, and Mike Glennon— start for them this season. There’s really no telling at this point what the Jaguars will do regarding the QB situation and the musical chairs will likely continue.
Minshew is still questionable with a thumb injury and Luton very well lost his chance at another start with his four-interception performance against the Steelers. In Glennon’s first start on the year, he had a solid game and I wouldn’t be surprised he started next week against the Vikings.
Are the Jaguars tanking?
You have to wonder, are the Jaguars tanking at this point? They are in serious rebuild mode and need the draft capital. Purposely tanking would put them in contention for the number one draft pick in 2021, which they currently are one game behind the New York Jets from holding the top spot.
Many fans are hoping the Jaguars will tank in order to draft one of the top two quarterbacks in this years’ draft: Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields.
Will there be coaching changes?
It’s incredibly unlikely that Doug Marrone will remain the head coach in Jacksonville after the season ends. He has a disappointing win percentage of .377 (23-38) even though he was one game away from a super bowl appearance in his first full season as head coach for the franchise.
I would expect the front office to completely wipe the slate clean and start fresh in 2021.
What’s the plan for the general manager position?
The Jaguars wasted no time after losing their 10th game of the season and fired general manager Dave Caldwell after nearly eight seasons and only one season with a winning record. In the meantime, Trent Baalke has been named as the interim general manager and it’s unknown whether they plan to keep him on full-time.
Thankfully, the Jaguars GM positions will likely be a highly coveted one due to the number of young players on the team and the draft capital they have. Potential candidates for the job may include John Dorsey, Thomas Dimitroff, and Chris Shea.
