Will the Jacksonville Jaguars surprise many of us and make the playoffs or will it be another season of wait until next year?

Not many people are giving the Jacksonville Jaguars a fighter’s chance this coming season. If you haven’t already read what Joshua Walker had to say in his most recent story here on Black and Teal, he is sure the Jaguars will make the playoffs.

It’s rare to read such enthusiasm and confidence about this franchise.

If you have looked at my more recent predictions, you see I have the Jacksonville Jaguars winning five games and, to be honest, that might be generous. Matt Verderame of FanSided.com predicts just two victories, which places them squarely in the hunt for the top overall pick in 2021.

The season will be predicated on how well Gardner Minshew progresses in Year 2 of his NFL career and how well the Jaguars improve their defense. There are many youngsters on this roster and still a lack of depth at some positions.

The clock is ticking on whether head coach Doug Marrone survives the entire season.

Our staff here at Black and Teal has weighed in as well, with their own predictions of the Jacksonville Jaguars record for the 2021 season.

Anthony Robertson – Based on the schedule, there are certainly a lot of winnable games. Games like the Chargers, Bengals, and the Dolphins are games that can swing either way, and a lot of it depends on how these rookie quarterbacks play.

Unfortunately, the middle of the season will be a rough schedule with the Packers coming off an NFC Championship appearance, the Steelers who outperformed their poor quarterback play last season and now have their starter returning, the Browns who have a ton of talent on both sides of the ball, the Vikings who have one of the best running game in the league, the Titans who are coming off an AFC Championships appearance, and the Ravens who had the best record in football last season.

It’s going to be tough but if Jacksonville can manage to go 3-3 between those games, the playoffs are a possibility. Unfortunately, being such a young team I do not think they will be able to do that. My final record  prediction: 5-11

Joshua Walker – The Jacksonville Jaguars are going to go 9-7 if the schedule is played in full. With wins coming from the: Lions, Bengals, Bears, Chargers, Steelers, Dolphins, Browns, and two divisional wins. Call me overly optimistic. This is an easy schedule that the Jaguars, with a revamped defense and elevated offense, should take advantage of.

There is absolutely no chance the Jaguars are in a position to tank for Trevor Lawrence and I won’t even entertain the idea. Point blank, this should be a good team going up against an easy schedule.

Lorenzino Estrada – Jacksonville will go into the 2020 season with a favorable start and a grueling finish. The team will notch a series of wins early on but will struggle against top tier teams after the bye week.

Another disappointing season is on the horizon in Duval as the Jaguars will go 5-11. But, a youth movement and the progression of Gardner Minshew will make the Jaguars an interesting team to keep an eye on in 2020.

Jesse Overby – The Jaguars play two games against opponents that they were better than both offensively and defensively last year – so that’s two wins. But that means they play 14 games against teams that were better than them. Jay Gruden will be key. Can he put a playbook together that takes the pressure off a suspect offensive line? How will he use the tight end, Tyler Eifert?

The Jaguars play five teams that had top 10 defenses last year. Plus six games against AFC South division teams that were all better than the Jaguars last year. That’s 11 losses. I’m finding it hard for them to win five games next year. But the first preseason game isn’t until Aug 6. Really early prediction: 3 – 13.

Kathy Clark – To start, I have no idea what the regular-season record will be if there is a season. First, there may be no training camp to evaluate and insert new players into the lineup. Next, it will be almost impossible to develop the timing for the new offense.

Last, no one can predict how the lack of practice will affect the teams we play during the season. I think the ceiling will be 8-8 and that would be great. On the other side, the wins could go to a low of two.

Grant Gunderson – I don’t think that winning 8 games is impossible in 2020 for the Jaguars. That said, I do think it would take quite a bit ‘going right’ for that to happen.

There are just so many unknowns.

Will Gardner Minshew II be who all of Duval wants him to be? Will Leonard Fournette actually prove through production that he has a chip on his shoulder? Can the defensive line step-up without Calais Campbell? Will our secondary get back to the 2017 form?

We just don’t know. Will the underdogs prevail? Time will tell.
