Leonard Fournette takes to Twitter to discuss Jaguars future
By David Levin
The question continues with the Jacksonville Jaguars – “What is going to happen to running back Leonard Fournette.”
Now that Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette knows where he stands with the team’s front office, the fourth-year star is committed to working as hard as he can at his craft despite the news of trade rumors that were swirling around the NFL draft.
Fournet is in a no-win situation with the organization, as general manager David Caldwell made no bones about the fact that he tried to ship the former first-round pick to the Miami Dolphins and had conversations with other teams during Draft weekend.
There is still plenty of speculation across the Internet that the Jaguars will still try to trade him before the start of the season. Judging by the lack of interest of NFL teams, it may be hard to accomplish. Leonard Fournette accounted for more than 1,700 yards from scrimmage last year and had his best season by far. He also showed more maturity on and off the field and became a team leader, something to Jacksonville Jaguars sorely need for this season.

The team did not draft a running back last weekend although they did use all 12 of their draft picks on other positions. Ryquell Armstead, the team’s fifth-round draft pick last year from Temple, is slated to be the back up this year. Should Fournette be treated, he would potentially be thrust into the starting role.
Speculation ran wild about the team’s displeasure with Fournette after he took to his Twitter account, suggesting the Jacksonville Jaguars bring in quarterback Cam Newton to replace Gardner Minshew. The social media post set off a firestorm, questioning Fournette’s feelings about the Jaguars moving forward in 2020 with the second-year player from Washington state under center.
Leonard Fournette has since said he has a good relationship with Minshew.
The Jaguars have not stated in any intention or any interest in signing Newton, however, several media outlets suggest that the team is the “front runner” to land him in free agency.
The Jaguars have a decision to make by May 4 whether to pick up Fournette’s fifth-year option. When asked about his future in Jacksonville, Caldwell discussed it vaguely with the media at the Combine in Indianapolis in February, stating it was a topic that will be discussed later. He also said at the time the Jaguars were focusing on free agency and the NFL draft.
Leonard Fournette has never publicly talked about his contract, which ends at the end of the 2020 season. He’s never asked to be traded publicly, and he has never publicly spoken in vein about the franchise since he was drafted in 2017.
As of right now, he is the third highest player on the roster behind Yannick Ngakoue and Andrew Norwell. He’s going to make more than $7 million in the final year before your deal that would pay him a total of $27 million over four years.
