If the Jacksonville Jaguars decide to take a wide receiver in the first round of the NFL Draft, which player should they choose?

It’s an argument I’ve been having with myself for quite some time. Personally, I am of the belief the Jacksonville Jaguars have more pressing needs to fill than those at the wide receiver position. but as I listen to the local and national media, there is a very real possibility the front office will take a playmaker with at least one of their first-round picks on Thursday night.

While there have been plenty of mock drafts leaning towards general manager David Caldwell leaning in this direction as well, picking one with the ninth overall pick, I have been reluctant to get behind that kind of move.

It’s possible I am still having nightmares about wide receivers from the past, where name is like Reggie Williams and Matt Jones failed us in becoming a true No. 1 wideout during the Jack Del Rio era. From what I gather and have studied, none of the top prospects come close to the lack of production those two former Jaguars showed in their particularly awful tenures here in Jacksonville.

I have nothing against the notion of adding another playmaker to this offense other than the fact that there are other needs on this roster that Caldwell and head coach Doug Marrone should address first. Given that the team already has three players at the position who runs a sub 4.4 in the 40, it’s logical for me to think that the defensive line, the offensive line, and the secondary are severely lacking.

I would be more comfortable if the team use the 20th pick to add a wide receiver, which might mean someone like Derrick Brown, Mekhi Becton or Javon Kinlaw are still on the board. I’m sure Jaguars fans – at least some of them – would agree with me.

Even then, there are still plenty of top-flight pass catchers to choose from. It’s likely the first round will be full of names like Jerry Judy and Henry Ruggs of Alabama, Cee Dee Lamb of Oklahoma, and Justin Jefferson of LSU. I also believe the second round may offer Denzel Mims from Baylor or Brandon Aiyuk from Arizona State – two players could still fill the position the team wants opposite DJ Chark.

If there was ever a year to draft a wide receiver it is this year. Heck, the Jacksonville Jaguars could grab two or more with their 12 picks. I only ask the team seriously considers other areas of need before they leap at making such a decision.

And if they do draft one in the first round, please address it later with their second selection.
