Despite the many needs the team has at other key positions, should the Jacksonville Jaguars draft quarterback Jordan Love?

Recent mock drafts have paired multiple quarterbacks to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but will the team elect to use one of its 12 picks on a signal-caller?

One to keep an eye on is Utah State quarterback Jordan Love, who is a heavy riser among draft analysts and is being touted as the next Patrick Mahomes with his big arm and ability to dazzle with his mobility.

Love’s best season came in his junior year, throwing for 3,567 yards, 30 touchdowns, and only six interceptions while leading the Aggies to an 11-2 record.

Recently in his senior season, Love threw for 3,402 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. While his senior season doesn’t emulate his junior season numbers, Love has the potential to shine in the NFL.

Love’s biggest strength is his ability to throw the deep ball. The 6’4″ quarterback stands tall in the pocket when launching balls down the field, and the system he played in at Utah State did a good job in showcasing his passing ability.

Another skill for Love is when he is forced outside the pocket, making great throws while off balance.

The comparisons to Mahomes can be seen in glimpses when turning on the tape, but Love has a series of drawbacks that may hinder the Jacksonville Jaguars from taking the high-risk, high-reward gunslinger.

The NFL.com comparison for Jordan Love is Blake Bortles, and that can also be seen when watching the film. A big drawback for Love is when he is in the pocket, often finding himself staring for too long, which doesn’t benefit him with a longer throwing motion.

Love’s productivity also took a step back in 2019, with almost as many interceptions as touchdowns. His ceiling can be someone like Ben Roethlisberger but can fall like Bortles.

Is Love worth taking a risk on with a first-round pick for the Jaguars? Looking at the team’s roster, Jacksonville has other glaring needs to address with the 9th and 20th picks, potentially going with a defensive lineman or wide receiver with the picks.

Plus the trade of Nick Foles shows the team has confidence in Gardner Minshew to lead the team for the coming seasons.

With the success and potential Minshew showed during the 2019 season, Jacksonville should invest its draft capital on players who can immediately benefit the team and make the quarterback better instead of trying for another arm to compete that will likely lead to differences in the locker room and amongst the fans.

Jacksonville’s front office needs a win right now given the fans opinion of Dave Caldwell and Shad Khan, drafting a quarterback won’t do that or help the team get close to its likely goals.
