Will the Jaguars and their starters show enough progress in a handful of snaps to make us believe this team is improved in 2019?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are playing the Miami Dolphins in Week 3 of the preseason, and many of the starters should see some action.

The preseason is usually used to evaluate the development of new players and players looking to make the roster. It is also used to figure out position battles and placed starters for the regular season. However, the third preseason game often is used to evaluate starters and see how they progressed during the offseason.

With this being said, here are some of the key matchups to watch for during the Jaguars-Dolphins game from Miami.

1. Nick Foles vs The Dolphins secondary – The long-awaited arrival of Nick Foles seeing playing time is finally here. He will be going up against a defense with a lot of talent in the secondary.  The Miami Dolphins have Xavien Howard, Reshad Jones, and Minkah Fitzpatrick. It may be a tough first outing for Foles, but there is a lot of excitement surrounding his first appearance in a Jaguars uniform.

However, Foles is ready for the game and the chemistry doesn’t seem to be a problem during practice.

2. Jaguars running game vs Dolphins run defense  – Historically the Dolphins usually have a pretty solid run defense and though it is the preseason. Miami may want to play their young defense a bit longer to give them more reps before the start of the season.

The running game will continue to be an important part of the Jaguars offense this season and we may see the starters finally get some reps.

With this being said, the reps may be limited for Leonard Fournette so that he is healthy for the start of the season. That may be beneficial for the Jaguars however so that the backups can be figured out and can build chemistry with the offensive line and start to understand their tendencies.

3. The Jaguars receivers vs. each other – One of the key matchups in the game won’t even be against another team, but competition within our own roster.

This year is intriguing because in practice most of the receivers have done a good job and have built chemistry with Foles rather quickly. Chris Conley, Dede Westbrook, and DJ Chark have all flashed big-play potential. Marqise Lee has returned to practice and will hopefully be ready at the start of the season, but luckily with the close depth at receiver he will not have to rush back and should have time to heal.

This game may decide who will be the starting wideouts when Week 1 rolls around against the Kansas City Chiefs.
