By Kathy Clark
The Jacksonville Jaguars have had a few swings and misses on first round draft picks over the 25 years of the team’s existence. Here are the three best draft picks, chosen by our own Kathy Clark.
Who are the Jacksonville Jaguars three best first-round draft choices? The winners are…Tony Boselli, Fred Taylor, and Marcedes Lewis.
The Jaguars have the seventh pick in the first round of the NFL draft. Over the years, the organization has made some great first-round choices and some poor ones as well. Let’s look at three of the greatest choices from the past.
There are many factors that make a player successful. Right system, right coaching, and right personality are important. However, the true stars have something special that makes them shine above all the rest.

Tony Boselli – Boselli was the second choice in the first round in 1995. He was the first and best ever picked by the Jaguars. He played his college ball at the University of Southern California and was a first-team All American in 1992, 1993, and 1994. In addition, he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
As a Jaguar he was selected to the Pro Bowl five times. He was a first-team All-Pro from 1997-99. He was a member of the 1990s All-Decade Team. Finally, he was the first player selected to the Jaguars ring of honor The Pride of the Jaguars.
Boselli was and is considered by experts as one of the greatest left tackles of all time. He was capable of blocking out the best pass rushers of his era.
"Peter King was quoted as saying, “Tony Boselli had six years of greatness and you could argue in that period of time he was the best left tackle in football.”"
His career was sadly cut short by injury but there is little doubt that he was the best player in Jaguars history.
Fred Taylor – Taylor was the ninth player chosen in the 1998 draft. The Jaguars traded quarterback Rob Johnson to the Buffalo Bills for this pick. They got a great player.
Taylor played running back at the University of Florida. He is in the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame and the Florida/Georgia Hall of Fame. He is 36th on the list of all-time great Gators.
As a Jaguar, he was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2007 and was voted All-Pro the same year. He is in the Jaguars ring of honor The Pride of the Jaguars.
His statistics are impressive. He ran for 11,695 yards rushing, 66 rushing touchdowns, 2,384 yards receiving, and eight receiving touchdowns. He is 17th on the all-time list of NFL rushing leaders. Although he started his career known as “Fragile Fred” due to injuries early in his career, he was a tough runner and had a long successful career.
Marcedes Lewis – Lewis was the 28th selection in the 2006 draft. He played his college football at UCLA and was an All American and All PAC 10 performer in 2004 and 2005. He won the John Mackey Award tight end in college football.
During his twelve years as a Jaguar, he was named to the 2010 Pro Bowl and was second team All Pro. Lewis had 378 receptions for 4,541 yards and 33 touchdowns. He was known more as a blocking tight end and was an integral part of our offensive line.
In addition, he was a locker room leader and was a team captain in his final season. Many might not agree with this choice but his leadership, blocking ability, longevity, and team first mentality make him my choice.
The Jaguars have picked a total of 26 first round draft choices. I am sure everyone has a favorite.
