Where does Nick Foles rank among the four quarterbacks in the AFC South?

I asked this question of fellow local sports writers on the day that the Jaguars announced they had signed Nick Foles to be there new quarterback.

Where does the team’s new signal caller rank amongst the quarterbacks in the AFC South?

It wasn’t a long discussion. There is an established pecking order with Andrew Luck of Indianapolis leading the way. Marcus Mariota was the last player discussed. The fight for the second and third position was a toss up, at least for a few minutes.

Deshaun Watson of Houston is thought to be the second best at his position for now. I don’t necessarily agree with that, given what Foles has accomplished in his time in Philadelphia. What he has that none of the other quarterbacks in the division have, that being a Super Bowl ring and an MVP in the post season, should weigh heavily in the conversation.

It’s difficult to look at someone who has not played against the other three opponents in the division on a consistent basis and say he is better than any of his three colleagues. Nick Foles and the Jaguars will have to prove on the field that they are much better this coming season then 2018. And by doing so, he will fall into place as one of the top quarterbacks not only in the AFC South, but in the conference, period.

What the Jaguars are getting according to his former coach Doug Pederson, is a leader and solid football player. The two have a relationship that will continue eventhough Nick Foles is no longer wearing an Eagles uniform.

"“He’s someone who can really bring that offense together, and bring that team together,” Pederson said at the NFL Team meetings in Arizona this week.“He’s not going to be a rah-rah guy,” Pederson said. “He’s not going to stand on the table and say, ‘Hey, follow me.’ He’s one of those guys who’s going to lead by example. He’s going to work extremely hard. He’s going to be in early and out late. He’s going to demand excellence from everybody.”"

The Jaguars need a player who can take control of the game when it matters most. Someone who can help bring the team down the field and score when needed. Foles came into games in relief of Carson Wentz the past two seasons because of injuries and delivered on the NFL’s biggest stage.

While many think he comes into the division having to do some work to leapfrog Watson, having been in the playoffs and winning the league’s greatest prize should give him a leg up in the question and a chance to catch Luck, should the Jaguars make it back to the playoffs and potentially the Super Bowl.
