Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Jacksonville Jaguars will retain head coach Doug Marrone for the 2019 season despite a losing record this season.

It’s not official from the Jacksonville Jaguars, but NFL Insider Ian Rapoport took to his Twitter account Sunday morning to write that the organization would retain head coach Doug Marrone for the 2019 season.

After a season that has been nothing short of disastrous, the thought is injuries and quarterback plan has been a major reason for the lack of progress following a 10-6 record in 2017 and a trip to the AFC Title game.

After the Jaguars lived through four seasons with Gus Bradley at the helm, making a decision like this may seem a bit quick. Marrone will be asked to right the ship and possibly change his coaching staff after this season in two weeks.

"“Both the Jaguars and Panthers, at the tail end of lost seasons, are expected to keep their head coaches for the 2019 season, sources say,” Ian Rapoport writes."

The story came out early in  the morning prior to the Jaguars 17-7 win over the Miami Dolphins. Jacksonville has won five games this season.

The organization has had a series of injuries that have crippled the team on offense, but suspect play calling led to Marrone firing his offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and poor play under center forced the benching of quarterback Blake Bortles. The moves have done little stimulate the offense, which is one of the worst in the league.

Bortles did replace starter Cody Kessler in the second quarter of the game when the starter was injured and then replaced him again in the third quarter to rally the team to the victory. The win was Jacksonville’s second in their last 11 games.

"“For the Jaguars, owner Shad Khan is not panicking, sources say, nor is he looking for a scapegoat, Rapoport added. “Less than a year after locking in his entire upper-level power structure to contract extensions, he wants to see it through. They were, after all, a tipped pass away from the Super Bowl.”"

Marrone took over Jacksonville as the interim head coach when Khan fired Gus Bradley with two games remaining in the 2016 season. He was elevated to head coach when the team brought in Tom Coughlin to serve as executive vice-president of football operations.

The two are viewed as hard-nosed coaches who believe in tough practices and leading a run-first offense. That may change in 2019 when the team brings in a new offensive coordinator.
