Reflections on a Jaguars victory
By Kathy Clark
As fans turned on the TV or the radio, drove to the stadium, or prepared to stream the Jaguars game I wonder how many thought we would win.
It would be great to think we were all confident but after seven losses in a row, it was difficult to predict a victory for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Let’s take a look at some of the problems the team had to overcome.
On offense, there were many issues. A makeshift offensive line, a new and inexperienced quarterback, a star running back suspended, the high draft choice receiver injured, a high priced free agent offensive lineman out for the season, and of course the fact that Andrew Luck is back and points must be scored to win.
The issues faced by the defense were equally daunting. First, an injured Jalen Ramsey. Next, two rookies would play massive minutes during the game. And most of all, the knowledge that the depleted offense was unlikely to score many points. The defense had their work cut out for them.

The game itself was a bit ugly and more than a little painful to watch but the bottom line was a much-needed victory was produced by a defensive performance for the ages.
Defense – The entire defense was amazing, played with heart, and literally put the team on their back. Telvin Smith had 12 tackles and Myles Jack had 10. Yannick Ngakoue and Calais Campbell each had a sack.
Ramsey was all over the field and played one of the very best games of his young career. The Indianapolis Colts had only 41 yards rushing as the Jaguars defense made them one dimensional.
Offense – Cody Kessler with only minimal practice time with the first team and behind a decimated offensive line had no interceptions and recovered his only fumble.
In addition, he managed to get 29 yards rushing. It wasn’t a performance of all pro quality by any stretch of the imagination, but it was just good enough. T.J. Yeldon had 7 receptions for 49 yards and continued to be a bright spot in a dismal passing game.
Kicking game – Josh Lambo managed to make both his field goal attempts and our punter Logan Cooke had 7 punts for an average of 49 yards. Both kickers have been solid all season and deserve credit for their play. They may be the Jaguars MVPs of 2018.
The future – Obviously the Jaguars players, coaches, and management are looking to the future. The number of injuries made it difficult to produce consistent play on the field. Possible new ideas about training and measures to reduce injuries need to be carefully considered.
The draft and free agency didn’t add enough to the team to overcome adversity. Quarterback, offensive line, wide receiver, and running back are areas that must improve in 2019. The offensive coaching was mediocre.
The lack of offensive talent made the defense try to overcome mistakes that can’t be overcome. The Jaguars need to add offensive talent to complement a very talented defense. The future is bright if moves to correct these issues are implemented.
