The Jaguars Lose to the High Flying Chiefs
By Kathy Clark
“It’s been a very long time and in fact may have been forever since a Jacksonville Jaguars game was the premiere game of the week. The Jaguars/Chiefs game got the number one CBS announcers as well. This was a golden opportunity to show portions of the NFL fan base a great team that is never televised in their area.
Not only was the game THE GAME of the week, but it was also a classic battle between a high flying offense and a punishing defense. The Jacksonville Jaguars are a throwback team.
Vince Lombardi would have loved Jacksonville. The Chiefs are “today’s” team with a high power offense. Sadly on this day offense reigned supreme.
First quarter
The weather at the start of the game was not the best for the Jaguars. The cool rainy weather is difficult for a team used to 90-plus degrees and high heat indexes.

The Men in Black and Teal punted after one first down and the Chiefs roared down the field for a touchdown as the sun miraculously appeared.
Perhaps a good omen for the Jags. Jacksonville got the ball again and oddly played the Chiefs game with long incomplete passes – said by Tony Romo color commentator.
Romo continued to comment on the creativity of the Chiefs offense as designed by Andy Reid head coach of the Chiefs.
Second quarter
The Chiefs continued to move the ball down the field and the Jaguars returned to the running game with some success. Unfortunately, running back Corey Grant left the game with an injury. A Jacksonville 13-play drive ended with no score.
The Jaguars defense had an interception by Tashaun Gipson, first of the season for Patrick Mahomes, and a sack by Yannick Ngakoue. Both defense turnovers were followed by miscues by Blake Bortles. The last drives of the second quarter ended with two Bortles interceptions and a Bortles fumble. The quarter blessedly ended.
Third quarter
Mahomes and the Chiefs drive started on the Jaguars 4-yard-line and ended with a 38-yard field goal. It was obvious that the Jaguars defense was tired and winded. Jacksonville responded with a touchdown from Bortles to TJ Yeldon. The defense needed this time to rest and regroup. The quarter ended with the Chiefs driving again.
Fourth quarter
The first play of the quarter was a rushing touchdown by Kareem Hunt. Bortles throwing mechanics continued to deteriorate as the game progressed. Sidearm throws, wind-ups, and throwing off the front foot does not help the cause.
Just as I wrote this Bortles threw another interception. Mahomes threw another interception to A.J. Bouye his second of the day. Bortles scored a running touchdown and the Jaguars recovered an onside kick. The Jaguars were unable to score.
What happened
No doubt it would be easy to blame Bortles for this fiasco and he certainly had a “Bad Bortles” day. However, the offensive line allowed an unbelievable amount of pressure all day. The offensive coordinator called an all pass all the time game and completely ignored the run far too early.
The Chiefs much-maligned defense had five sacks and three interceptions. They didn’t at all resemble the worst defense in the league. The Kansas City offense is as advertised. The defense played a decent game but was not helped at all by the offense.
Bortles threw 61 passes for over 400 yards. This shows that statistics can mean absolutely nothing.
This was a disappointment but it’s over and done. Next up America’s Team….the Dallas Cowboys.
