Jacksonville Jaguars are Being Cautious with Their Running Backs this Week
By David Levin
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone told the media on Monday that both running backs, Leonard Fournette, and T.J. Yeldon are listed as “day-to-day” ahead of the team’s game against the New York Jets.
The Jacksonville Jaguars may have been the NFL leader in rushing last season with over 141 yards per game, but the 2018 season has proven nothing stays the same. The running game hasn’t been able to get going like it did last season because of injuries to both running backs, Leonard Fournette and T.J. Yeldon.
Yeldon saw the field on Sunday in the 9-6 loss to the Tennessee Titans, but Corey Grant got the start. Fournette, who is still dealing with a hamstring issue, was held out of the game for a second consecutive week.
In a close game like Sunday was at TIAA Bank Field, having a more consistent running attack may have been a factor in the divisional loss to the Titans.

"“Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said RBs Leonard Fournette (hamstring) and T.J. Yeldon (ankle) will be day-to-day this week,” ESPN.com’s Michael DiRocco wrote. “He said he’s optimistic about RG A.J. Cann (triceps) being back. If Cann can get through Thursday’s practice with no issues it looks good for him playing against the NY Jets on Sunday.”"
Having Cann on the field will also help the running game, which has been anything but explosive so far this season. The Jaguars are 13th in the league in rushing average with 109.3 yards per game. Yeldon leads the Jaguars with 153 yards on the ground through three games.
Fournette has missed two and a half games with the hamstring injury and was a game-time decision on Sunday. Yeldon was on the team’s injury report all week. Grant and Brandon Wilds are the only two “healthy” running backs on the roster.
The Jaguars also have fullback Tommy Bohanon available on the roster.
Yeldon led the Jaguars with 44 yards on the ground on seven carries. He also led the team with six catches for 46 yards. He is the team’s best pass-catching runner out of the backfield.
