Time to take a look at the 2018 draft needs for the Jacksonville Jaguars defense
By Kathy Clark
It is obvious that the Jacksonville Jaguars had a great defense in 2017. However, this is the NFL and teams must continue to improve and upgrade. Luckily for the Jaguars, the front office is well aware of this as proven by the moves in free agency.
The defense for the Jacksonville Jaguars currently has very solid starters in most areas. Equally important are backups and depth. Injuries occur during the season and there must be an adequate backup. Also, defensive players need to have rest periods after chasing running backs and quarterbacks around the field. Substitutes are critical to a successful season.
Defensive Line
The defensive line’s returning starters played very well last season. Top-end Jaguars returning defensive linemen include Calais Campbell, Yannick Ngakoue, Malik Jackson, Marcell Dareus, Abry Jones and Dante Fowler. As a result, the starting unit looks strong. The Jaguars may look for an interior lineman and an edge rusher later during the draft.
Linebacker
To start, the Jaguars will need to replace Paul Posluszny. No doubt Myles Jack moves to the middle linebacker position. Telvin Smith continues as an outside backer, but the Jags will need another. Current depth at linebacker includes Blair Brown, Donald Payne, and Lerentee McCray. The Jaguars need depth and a possible starter at linebacker. Therefore, expect a linebacker to be chosen early in the draft.

Cornerback
The Jaguars two superstar cornerbacks, Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye, return for the 2018 season. Also, D.J. Hayden was acquired in free agency is asked to fill the very big shoes of Aaron Colvin at nickel. This doesn’t appear a critical area for a draft choice early.
Safety
Four players currently fill out the safety positions. Starters Tashaun Gipson and Barry Church, and backups Cody Davis and Don Carey signal a solid group. As a result, it’s doubtful that a safety will be drafted.
Draft Day
The Jaguars defensive choices on draft day include a linebacker first and foremost. In addition, the defensive line will no doubt get some consideration. There is no question that the Jacksonville brain trust is setting up their draft board. I have no doubt they will make great choices just as they have the past four years.
