THE JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS FACE ANOTHER MUST WIN GAME.  HOWEVER QUARTERBACK PLAY IS POOR AND COACHING DECISIONS ARE QUESTIONABLE.

.The Jaguars face a must win game this week.  The team is in the race for the division championship. Equally important the Jaguars have a winning record with a victory. The national media discusses the Jaguars on a regular basis. A losing record reduces their interest in the Jags. In essence, victory  is very important. However, the Daytona Journal and Jaguars.com reported some very disturbing story lines.  Blake Bortles is  on the hot seat, of course.  Equally important Coach Doug Marrone joined him on the hot seat this week.

BLAKE BORTLES CANT READ THE DEFENSE

Blake Bortles is our quarterback.  Moreover, he has numerous flaws. In addition Mark Long of the Associated Press exposed another flaw.  Bortles can’t read defenses.

"Blake Bortles broke the huddle, lined up under center and did a double take.  Four defensive linemen, four linebackers and a safety all in the box.   That was definitely a first Bortles saidEven though six of these defenders were on the line of scrimmage, Bortles continued withthe play…a handoff to Fournette.  He was stopped for a one yard gain.  This may be a blueprintfor other teams to slow down the NFLs top running attack"

The Rams played goal line defense in the middle of the field.   Moreover Leonard Fournette was held in check for the rest of the game.  As a result the Jaguars lost a winnable game.  The question is very simple.  Why didn’t Bortles change the play?  There are two possible answers. First, he didn’t know that the defense was lined up to stop the run.  Next, he doesn’t have the authority to change plays.  Both answers are troubling.  As a result there are questions.  The questions require answers.

COACH MARRONE WAS SURPRISED BY 9 MEN IN THE BOX

Coach Marrone is responsible for this as well.  Apparently he made no effort to call time out or change the play.  Afterward Coach Marrone said (John Oehser Jaguars.com)

"It was a 6-2 goal line type front.  That’s my fault.  I didn’t think they would do that.  I put thaton me. Obviously going forward it’s something we have to be prepared for."

Fans, opposing teams, writers, etc said this defense would happen.  Therefore Marrone knew this defense was a possibility. Sadly, he did nothing to prepare for it.  Why?  He looked at the field.  The formation was obvious. Furthermore, he stood and watched Fournette get hammered.

SUMMARY

Marrone is an NFL head coach.  Also he coached for many years. Of course he knows what a goal line defense looks like.  Bortles is a starting QB in the NFL.  Additionally he started for four years.  Therefore he recognized a goal line defense.  Adjustments are necessary.  Time for some changes.  In conclusion the Jaguars braintrust must adjust to the eight and nine man front.  Otherwise a long season is in the cards.
