The first quarter of the 2017 season for the Jacksonville Jaguars will be completed by the end of Sunday.  The Jaguars could be first quarter winners for the first time in a long, long, long time.  Did anyone see this coming?

The Jacksonville Jaguars will complete the first quarter of the 2017 season during the following weekend.  Imagine the Jaguars with a winning record!   It could happen.  The Jaguars went into training camp with high expectations.  However, their preseason play brought fans back to earth very quickly.  The Houston Texans game raised hopes.  But the Tennessee Titans game made the fans start to say…”same old Jags.”  Then the Jaguars played lights out against the Baltimore Ravens.  Now they will at least be 2-2 at the end of the first quarter.  I believe they have an excellent chance to be 3-1 for three reasons.

THE QUARTERBACK COMPARISON

The first reason is that Blake Bortles is a superior quarterback to Josh McCown.  The Bortles problems have been dissected and redissected this season.  I will spare the fans a rerun.  Bortles is young, mobile, and can manage the game.  He needs the play caller to call early safe passes to open up the New York Jets defense.  In addition, he needs a solid running game. This is the formula used to defeat the Ravens.  Josh McCown is an older journeyman quarterback.  His skills are at best average.  Sadly for him, he hasn’t been able to hang on to a starting quarterback position for a long period of time.  Bortles is the superior quarterback of the two.

THE RUNNING GAME

Next reason is the better running game. The Jaguars have the potential for a very solid running game.  Leonard Fournette looks like the real deal. He has the talent to be a featured back.  Chris Ivory is a good backup and change of pace.  Corey Grant showed great potential during the fourth quarter of the game against the Ravens.  The Jets, on the other hand, don’t have a franchise caliber running back.  They have three running backs. The backs are Bilal Powell, Matt Forte, and Elijah McGuire.  Unfortunately  no one has stepped up to become the featured back.  The Jaguars running game is superior at this time.

THE DEFENSIVE SECONDARY

Last reason is the Jags secondary. Both the Jets and the Jags have good secondaries. The Jets secondary has an excellent cover cornerback in Morris Claiborne.  The rookie safeties, Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye, are highly rated.  At the same time the safeties are rookies and need time to develop NFL skills.  The Jaguars have two top notch corners in Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye. In addition, the Jags have two very good safeties in Barry Church and Tashaun Gipson.   Plus the Jags are experienced NFL proven players.  Consequently, the Jaguars have the edge.

DISCUSSION

The Jets and Jaguars are both teams that have been bottom feeders for a while. Similarly, both teams have strong defenses and questionable offenses.  In addition both teams are trying to rebuild through the draft and free agency.  It appears that the Jaguars have a stronger team. Therefore, they have an excellent chance to win the game on Sunday.
