Even though he hasn’t played a down for his new team yet, Calais Campbell is already the best player on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster.

After the 2015 season, you could have had a rousing discussion about who the best player on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster was in terms of talent and production. Between Blake Bortles, Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns, Telvin Smith, and Paul Posluszny, there were plenty of arguments to be made.

After the 2016 seasons, almost all of those players fell off and the Jaguars relied heavily on recent free agent additions. Blake Bortles might not even be the best quarterback on the team let alone the best player overall.

Conor Orr over at NFL.com recently went through all the team’s who’s best player isn’t a quarterback, and unsurprisingly the Jacksonville Jaguars were on the list. His choice for the best player on the team was an interesting one.

"Jacksonville Jaguars: Calais Campbell, DEThough Campbell has not yet played a down for the Jaguars, he instantly becomes the most accomplished and respected player in the locker room, save for maybe Malik Jackson. The Jaguars’ offseason facelift was encouraging, reinforcing the notion that the ascending club can ink top-tier free agents. Blake Bortles remains their major question mark, hence Jacksonville’s place on the list."

You could make an argument for Malik Jackson as well, but I think Campbell consistently gets praised for what he’s done over the course of his entire career. Campbell was also the lone Jaguars player on the NFL Network Top 100 list, and he’s the highest graded player on the roster according to Pro Football Focus.

The conceit of the article is still somewhat concerning, as ultimately you want your quarterback to be the best player on the your roster since he is your most important player. Blake Bortles seemed close to that pedestal after 2015 but now it’s questionable whether or not he’s even on the team after 2017.

Hopefully Blake will make it tougher to put the Jaguars on a list like this next season.
