The Jacksonville Jaguars finally have players of their own to re-sign, and the wave of second contracts is beginning with Allen Hurns.

The Jacksonville Jaguars went all-in on offense in the 2014 NFL Draft after they took Blake Bortles with the third overall pick. Bortles, Marqise Lee, Allen Robinson, and Brandon Linder were tasked with building the foundation of the franchise moving forward.

The Jaguars were able to find one more key piece however in undrafted free agency and now he’s locked onto the team for a few more years.

According to Pro Football Talk, the Jacksonville Jaguars signed wide receiver Allen Hurns to a sizable contract extension.

Unlike the rest of the players entering their third season with the Jaguars, Hurns came onto the team as an undrafted free agent. This meant the rule in the collective bargaining agreement forcing players to accrue three full seasons before negotiating a new contract didn’t apply to him. So while Blake Bortles and Allen Robinson have to wait another year to sign a deal, Hurns was able to cash in some of the good will he’s built up by producing over the first two years of his career.

Hurns getting an extension isn’t at all surprising – even with the huge contracts they handed out in free agency, the Jaguars still have one of the healthiest cap situations in the league. Additionally, Hurns has been one of the most consistent and productive players at his position since coming into the league in 2014. Over his first two seasons, Hurns has caught 115 passes for 1,708 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns, the latter being a record for undrafted players.

While this seems like a lot of money for a second receiver, the contract is in line with other players who received deals this offseason and Hurns is better than most if not all of them.
