5) Johnathan Cyprien, strong safety, Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars still haven’t been able to pair Johnathan Cyprien with free safety Sergio Brown and really see what they both can do as one or the other is always injured. Brown (PFF’s ninth highest graded safety in the NFL) was out for Week 4 and while we didn’t get a chance to see them play together, Cyprien certainly showed he can be just as good as Brown.

Cyprien led the defense with 14 tackles and seemed to be all over the field.

With middle linebacker Paul Posluszny missing significant time during the game, Cyprien rose up to fill the void and he played beautifully.

As of this writing, Cyprien is the top graded safety for Week 4 by PFF. But his impact felt like so much more than just a high grade.

On Sunday we got to see the John Cyprien that the coaching staff has been promising us for the last two seasons. It’s his third season in the NFL and he may finally have arrived.

Sure, he was playing against a miserable Indianapolis Colts team, but he really excelled and proved he can be relied upon.

If Cyprien can keep this level of play up, I think the Jaguars may have found their next captain of the defense.
