2016 NFL Mock Draft: Jaguars eyeing a cornerback?

facebooktwitterreddit

The Jacksonville Jaguars just finished up their first preseason game last Friday, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t peer into the future and see where the Jaguars might be a year from now.

Looking at mock drafts in August is a rarity, but luckily Erik Lambert over at NFL Mocks is always willing to put his feet to the fire and dish out hot takes on who teams might be eyeing as the college football season begins.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have had the unfortunate pleasure of selecting in the top 3 of the last 3 drafts, but that’s almost certainly going to change in 2016. Selecting 7th in this mock draft, Lambert has the Jaguars upgrading their secondary in a big way:

"7. VERNON HARGREAVES III, CB, FloridaIn order for the brand of defense that Gus Bradley want to run to work right, he needs reliable corners who can play man on the outside.  Vernon Hargreaves is unquestionable the best there is at that in the 2016 class.  The kid is a tremendous athlete who displays all the quickness, speed and ball skills of a shutdown corner.  His only small drawback is being on the smaller side at 5’11”.  If the Jacksonville Jaguars have eyes though, the tape will show it doesn’t matter."

Hargreaves has probably been the best cornerback in college football over the past 2 seasons and he’ll undoubtedly be a top 10 pick in the upcoming draft. While I don’t really have a problem with this pick, I think this manufactured need the Jaguars have at corner is being overplayed quite a bit by the national media. Even if you don’t believe in Davon House (that touchdown he gave up to Martavis Bryant in the first preseason game wasn’t pretty), the Jaguars have two very promising corners in Demetrius McCray and Aaron Colvin. I’d prefer the Jaguars take a look at some other areas with bigger needs like linebacker, safety, and offensive line.
