Blake Bortles and Chad Henne: Where does the Jaguars’ Quarterback Situation Rank?
By Luke Sims
Blake Bortles and Chad Henne are likely going to be the two quarterbacks with the Jacksonville Jaguars for 2015. Both of them were with the team last season. Bortles replaced Henne after a couple of miserable games that saw the Jaguars’ offense stall. He immediately provided a spark to the offense, but he ultimately ended the season with a less than ideal touchdown to interception ratio of 11 to 17.
Blake Bortles needs to improve as a quarterback, but he showed enough flashes in a rookie campaign (which he was supposed to be riding the bench for) to keep us believing that he can be something special. With a better receiving corps and a much improved offensive line, Bortles has a real shot at turning 2015 into a breakout season. Chad Henne should continue his role as the primary backup. The two of them make a stronger quarterback pairing than some in the league.
Recently, Fox Sports decided to rank the quarterback situations for the 32 NFL teams and put Blake Bortles and the Jacksonville Jaguars at 26th. Here’s what they had to say:
"Bortles will enter the upcoming season as the unquestioned starter in Jacksonville. And while he showed flashes of brilliance during his rookie season, we still need to see more before he can be moved up this list. A big leap could be possible as the Jaguars continue to build around their 6-foot-5 quarterback."
The Jaguars’ quarterback situation was ahead of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins, and Buffalo Bills. That’s not great company. Blake Bortles was ranked below fellow 2014 top rookie quarterbacks Derek Carr and Teddy Bridgewater.
The truth is, that’s not an inaccurate place to put the Jaguars at this point. The Jaguars are banking on Bortles’ potential as a franchise quarterback. They believe it is there and it seems the rest of the league does too. There were certainly instances during the 2014 season when we all saw that potential flash in a rather awful season. Bortles will have to prove he is better than a low-end quarterback in the NFL this season and beyond or else the Jaguars could be in trouble. If I were to re-rank the quarterback situations in the league, I think I would put Bortles within one or two spots of 26th.
