6th Round Defensive Tackle Michael Bennett Signs Contract With Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed the 5th of their 8 rookies to contracts on Thursday, as Defensive Tackle Michael Bennett officially joined the team.

Bennett’s signing leaves only three rookies left for the Jaguars to sign this offseason.

It’s probably safe to say that Bennett was the most lauded of Jacksonville’s 8 draft picks. Considered by many to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick, Bennett is an absolutely perfect scheme fit for the Jaguars as a 3-technique defensive tackle. A little undersized, Bennett was extremely disruptive at Ohio State, and he should come in and have success in a very defined role early on.

Bennett is a bit of a luxury given the team’s biggest strength is probably the defensive line, but Bennett could find himself heavily involved in the defensive tackle rotation. Sen’Derrick Marks isn’t going to be taking a full workload as he comes back from a serious knee injury at the end of the 2014 season, and the Jaguars don’t really have another guy like Marks on the roster other than Bennett.

The team is also going to have to rely on their interior pass rush again in 2015 thanks to the season-ending injury to first round pick Dante Fowler Jr.
