2015 NFL Draft Grades: Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon

facebooktwitterreddit

T.J. Yeldon is a new running back for the Jacksonville Jaguars, looking to make a name for himself on a roster that is going to feature five running backs and no fullbacks for 2015.

Yeldon will figure to be a prominent part of the Jaguars’ rushing attack along with Denard Robinson who had a very solid 2014 as he emerged as an NFL-caliber running back.

But enough about what the Jaguars are going to do with the running backs, this is the NFL Draft and we’re all about those far too early draft grades. Co-editor Daniel Lago and I got to gether and came up with our grades for the Jaguars’ second round pick.

Like yesterday‘s selection of Dante Fowler Jr., I understand this pick, but I don’t agree with it. The Jaguars bypassed a handful of more talented players (Randy Gregory and DGB come to mind) to address a need. The Jaguars decided Yeldon was the top guy in that 2nd tier of running backs, and I can’t argue with them. Yeldon was ultra-productive at Alabama and he’s a perfect fit for the Jaguars’ zone blocking scheme. He should come in and start immediately on what’s already a very young offense.

I love that the Jaguars wanted a running back, sat where they were and got the guy they wanted. I was a bigger fan of Indiana’s Tevin Coleman or waiting to see if Boise State’ Jay Ajayi was available at the top of the third, but Yeldon is a top running back in this year’s draft and the Jaguars knew they wanted him over the other possible second rounders. Yeldon figures to be a prominent part of the Jaguars’ rushing attack in 2015 and beyond, providing a complement to Toby Gerhart and Denard Robinson. Congrats to Dave Caldwell and Gus Bradley for getting their guy!
