Did the Jaguars Put the Nail in Tom Coughlin’s Coffin?

Tom Coughlin has been a very successful NFL head coach. He doesn’t have the best winning percentage. He doesn’t have the best offenses or the best defenses.

But Tom Coughlin does have two Super Bowls.

He’s been a hard, strict, successful coach in the NFL and nobody can take that away from him. Just when fans seem to doubt him he comes right back and hands them a Super Bowl or a ten win season.

This season, at 3-9, it looks like Tom Coughlin may not get another shot at handing a 10 win season or a Super Bowl to the New York Giants or any other team. The 68 year old head coach has poured 19 seasons into the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Giants and he’s shown what it takes to be a winner.

But, like almost every coach in the NFL, his teams have declined to mediocrity and subpar play after some years of success. For Coughlin and the Jaguars, it was from 1996 through 1999 bringing the expansion team an unmatched string of four straight playoff seasons. He built the team up and he directed it to great success. Ultimately, however, the Jags declined. 2000-2002 saw just 19 wins for the franchise as they became a middling team once again.

The Giants may be on the tail end of a mediocre run under Coughlin as well. After four straight playoff seasons (including an 8-8 record in one) from 2005-2008 – including his first Super Bowl in 2007 – and then a 10 win 2010 (no playoffs) and another Super Bowl in 2011, Coughlin’s team has begun to skid. The 2014 season will mark the third season in a row that Coughlin has failed to make the playoffs. It will be his second sub-.500 season in a row. It may end up being his worst with the Giants since his first 6-10 season with the team.

Tom Coughlin’s Giants have hit a low.

The loss to the 2-10 Jaguars just put the nail in the coffin. The Giants have now lost seven straight. Will Coughlin finish the season? Will he get another shot? You’ve got to think unless he finishes in the conference championship or the Super Bowl  he’s a lame duck, running out time as management puts together a plan to replace him.

Tony Dungy has called for the great coach to step down.

After Sunday’s loss, it may be time. I’m glad the Jags got to bring him back to Jacksonville at least one more time, though.
