My pregame prescription this week was to get the Jacksonville Jaguars wide receivers involved and they finally did. While it’s doubtful they read my writing (but they should!), it’s good to see them do an about face after last week’s horrendous offensive showing. They beat my 10 recommended receptions by wide receivers.
This week it wasn’t just Marqise Lee getting looks. The rest of the Jaguars wide receivers were catching passes as well. Of Blake Bortles’ 21 completions, 14 were hauled in by wide receivers.
While there was a lack of diversity (only three wide receivers caught passes), the Jaguars are rather thin at the position overall right now due to injuries.
It was great to see Allen Hurns proving to be more dependable and it was especially excellent to see Marqise Lee make a play on a beautiful 30-yard pass from Blake Bortles for a touchdown.
Here’s that beauty:
It was a great play for the Jaguars, but it is simply representative of an overall game trend: getting the receivers involved.
This week I was wondering if Lee would be able to top 100 yards in a game and, while he didn’t do it here, he certainly proved he has the ability. Lee finished the day with six catches for 75 yards and a score. Allen Hurns didn’t bust anything open for a monster gain, but he did manage 42 yards on four receptions. Cecil Shorts III’s veteran presence was appreciated once again, amassing a mediocre 35 yards but proving dependable with his four catches.
If the Jaguars factor in a healthy Allen Robinson, they suddenly have a far more potent receiving corps. One that will have a year of experience next season and one that has grown together.
If Justing Blackmon ever returns to the NFL….well now we’re just in a complete daydream.
Congrats to the Jacksonville Jaguars receivers for playing a major role in getting the second win of the season and for taking care of business against the New York Giants.
