11 instant reactions from the Jaguars' electrifying win vs. Patriots in Week 3

The Denver Broncos soundly defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2. But instead of dwelling on the loss, the Jags put in the work to make sure they would bounce back when they welcome the New England Patriots at EverBank Stadium in Week 3. Specifically, head coach Liam Coen said the team put a renewed emphasis on fundamentals and execution in the days preceding the game. It worked.

Although Jacksonville got off to a slow start, the offense caught fire as the game progressed. Similarly, the defense overwhelmed quarterback Drake Maye, who lost a fumble and ended up throwing two picks.

Simply put, the Jaguars were the better team in Week 3, and it showed on the scoreboard. With this in mind, here are 11 instant reactions from the 35-6 win over New England.

1. Injuries hindered the Jaguars on the first offensive drive. First, linebacker Jahlani Tavia was slapped with an illegal block in the back. Just a couple plays later, rookie tight end Nate Boerkircher was flagged for a chop block. To nobody's surprise, Jacksonville ended up punting on that possession.

2. Brian Thomas Jr. seemingly was on the sidelines during Jacksonville's first offensive series while Josh Cameron logged a handful snaps. He was in the lineup for the second possession, though.

Thomas ultimately ended up catching just one pass for 8 yards on one target. If the Jags wanted to send a message, they succeeded.

3. Although the Jags didn't allow New England to score in their first few drives, they also had trouble defending their passing game. That said, Jacksonville got a huge break late in the first quarter when the football slipped out of Drake Maye's hands, and DaVon Hamilton recovered it, giving his team an extra offensive possession.

4. Parker Washington continues to make plays. He had the longest gain of the first quarter, reeling in a pass in the middle of the field for 18 yards. Later in the game, the former Penn State Nittany Lion scored twice on back-to-back plays, although the second one was the result of a penalty wiping out the play.

Maybe the Jags should go ahead and pay Washington already.

5. Trevor Lawrence connected with Josh Cameron for his first touchdown of the game. Although the rookie receiver doesn't get his name called often, he's already scored twice in three games. Later in the game, he had a long return. Expect him to keep getting opportunities in the near future.

6. Trevor Lawrence tried to thread the needle, targeting Brenton Strange in the middle of the field. However, Strange wasn't able to reel in the pass, and Patriots safety wasted no time intercepting that ball. The silver lining is that New England managed to get only three points out of the turnover to make it 7-3.

7. The Patriots had the top-ranked defense against the run heading into Week 3. Bhayshul Tuten didn't care, as he went on to pound the football. He toted the rock 15 times for 73 yards and had 17 yards on two receptions.

As a team, Jacksonville averaged 5.0 yards per carry against the New England defense.

8. Penalties kept hurting Jacksonville in the first half. The Pats were marching toward the end zone, and cornerback Jarrian Jones gave them five free yards with a holding penalty. The Jags were flagged for neutral infraction two plays later.

9. And just like that, Travis Hunter picked off his first NFL pass. The Patriots were within scoring distance of the Jacksonville red zone, Drake Maye targeted tight end Efton Chism, and the former Heisman Trophy winner intercepted the package midair.

Maybe the Jags were into something when they eased him into action.

10. The Jags had a chance to make it 17-3 by halftime, but Cam Little missed his 70-yard attempt, the second kick he misses this season. In his defense, his misses have been from 50+ yards out, so he deserves a bit of a break. In fact, the Jags probably sent him onto the field knowing he could miss.

11. Down 28-3, the Patriots were closing in on the Jaguars' end zone, but after reeling in a pass, New England wide receiver Mack Collins was flagged for taunting.

Like, how are you going to taunt your opponent when you're down by 25 points? The Pats ultimately had to settle for a field goal. Ultimately, that kind of penalty is one big reason New England lost and the Jaguars won.
